Newsnight is probably the strongest it's been for years so I don't think it should be seen as being at risk. I do think however losing its editor to Ch4, the lack of Government engagement with the programme and the sanctions Emily has had from the BBC for 'bias' has probably pushed her away.
Maybe LauraK will take over as lead presenter? The Sunday Morning slot I don't think would be right for her so a potential fit along with Kirsty, Mark and the other relief presenters that have filled in recently.

I've said for a while that Newsnight feels about one more round of budget cuts away from being axed, but it really does feel on its death knell with this. Wark is the only name presenter they've got left and she isn't going to stick around for ever. It's now a case of counting down the days before it is inevitably replaced by a new programme that just so happens to be simulcast on BBC News and BBC World News. Though, to be fair, a more prominent slot for the revamed Outside Source isn't something I'd say no to - it's by far the best development at BBC News in the last few years.

I don’t think Newsnight’s likely to be axed. It’s probably not worth criticism they’d receive for one. Even if they did simulcast a new show with BBC News and BBC World, why would they use any brand other than Newsnight?

Wow, this is shocking and an absolutelly massive loss for BBC and BBC News. :o :o :o
It's also a sign of what the future holds for the weakened BBC that can not compete financially with rivals and will have more of talent leave when there's a better offer somewhere else.
John and Emily had such a great partnership on BBC News Channel afternoon shifts, it was must see TV and it's nice to see they continue together.

It’s worth noting that LBC, in particular during Eddie Mair’s drive time slot, have started using a lot of ex-BBC correspondents and analysts too. Danny Shaw and Peter Hunt have both made frequent appearances lately, while Jon Sweeney was on with James O’Brien from Ukraine today. Declan Curry is their business commentator. All freelancers, I’m sure, but there are times where you tune into Eddie Mair and you’d be forgiven for thinking it was PM circa 2017.

Either one of Maitlis or Sopel could still join another broadcaster at any time, like working for Channel 4.
I doubt Global have made any massive financial commitments to talent beyond the next few years.
I said back in the old place I thought North America Editor might be Sopel’s last BBC position. They missed too many opportunities to give him a more prominent role, such as on Radio 4’s Today. He’d also have been an excellent replacement on PM. There is definitely a changing of the guard at the BBC right now, but I think you could argue that over time their lineups are weakening across the board. I’m not convinced Today’s lineup is as strong as it was a decade ago when Mishal first joined; Newsnight has been a mess for some time; the nationals are all over the place; the News Channel lineup has got weaker (gone are the days of Huw Edwards, Jane Hill, Simon McCoy, Jon Sopel et. al presenting on your average weekday.
I think the BBC will have to work harder now to persuade the senior presenters they’ve got to stick around in new and stable roles. Would Laura Kuenssberg accept the lead presenting role on Newsnight? Who has the experience, name and warmth to replace Marr full time?

To be honest when the only role left for Jon Sopel was possibly as a safe choice for Political Editor, which frankly felt like a step down, it was probably the right time for him to leave. Emily Maitlis though still has so much to offer - hopefully one day she'll return either at the BBC or ITN in a prominent TV role.
It's a big blow for Newsnight no doubt but I think it's in better shape than it was when Paxman left really. Faisal stepping up would probably be the best choice, but suspect he's a frontrunner for the political editor role too. Probably not the time or place to discuss the future of Newsnight in too much depth but I do think now it might be more useful at the heart of the News Channel's evening schedule than at 10.30 on BBC2.

Goodness - that came out of left field.
First things first Americast is surely not long for this world now (at least under that name) as much of that podcast was based around Maitlis & Sopel.
Also, bit of a hammer blow to Newsnight - getting a strong all-female presenting line-up only to lose two formidable broadcasters in Emma Barnett and then Emily Maitlis in quick succession.
In addition, the BBC Political Editor role seems to be one that nobody wants. Jon Sopel obviously isn’t getting it now and other obvious options like Vicki Young and Chris Mason have ruled themselves out.
The way the BBC wrapped the knuckles of Emily Maitlis too now with hindsight probably didn’t exactly improve her desire to stay. I did think it might come back to bite the BBC.
Most importantly though it’s a huge loss for the BBC. Sopel and Maitlis are/were among some of the most well-known news broadcasters at the Beeb - Sopel for covering Trump and Maitlis for Newsnight, elections, the Prince Andrew interview and much more - and both were two of the very best. This isn’t like a News Channel presenter leaving - it’s two big hitters departing. With the recent departures of the likes of Maitlis, McCoy, Louise Minchin and Marr among others it does feel the BBC is in a particular state of flux - though it’s not alone in that in the broadcasting arena.
That said with widespread criticism too of some of its choices in recent times it doesn’t feel like BBC News is in a great place

The question is if they do replace Farrari and he’s not happy to take a lesser slot, does he go to GB News or talkTV/radio.
Agree - I think Iain Dale is probably safe on evenings. He has, of course, already lost out once by being shifted away from Drive.
If they didn't have Eddie Mair on Drive, that would maybe have been a suitable place for Farrari to go. But he has been doing Breakfast for almost 2 decades now? A change is probably likely in the next few years, maybe he'd just retire.
Overall though, it's an interesting shift from Global. They've mopped up a fair bit of BBC talent, not just on LBC but to a less extent you've now got Dev & Yasmin Evans on Heart (previously Radio 1 / 1Xtra) and MistaJam on Capital Dance. Who next!?

Newsnight will continue. Many speculated about its future after the departure of Jeremy Paxman. Kirsty Wark is an excellent presenter and they have a strong team with Nick Watt, Faisal Islam etc. The BBC are clearly testing new presenters with Christian Fraser and Emma Vardy.
The poaching of talent by Global has been made easy ever since the BBC had to disclose salaries of on air talent. Working in the commercial sector now has the added benefit of your salary being private.
Global are clearly willing to spend to secure talent. The question is when this stops. If its investors decide to exit and take the company public, the talent bill may come under scrutiny by institutional shareholders.
That said, there's no doubt that a priority for Deborah Turness will be steadying the ship and restoring morale.
