Every few years the 'Neighbours Axed' claims come up. Its just C5 in my opinion playing hard ball to get a cheaper deal.
Considering C5/10 are both basically Viacom in all but name, you would think Viacom does a deal with Freemantle for Neighbours to air on various Viacom channels around the world, including C5 and 10 Peach.
I wouldn’t be too shocked if C5 are stupid enough to let it go, then another UK broadcaster will likely get a cut price deal to take it up. Maybe even BBC Three could be a good fit. 10Peach/THREE are targeting the same young tean audience, maybe even ITV2 which has a super weak daytime lineup of repeats and no clear direction.
The facts are, Neighbours lunchtime gets around 1 million viewers for C5. Then plenty stick around for the daily 2:15pm made for TV movies.
If anything I bet C5 wish they could worm their way out of the Home & Away deal, but they are stuck with it!
Neighbours easily beats H&A in the UK ratings, hence Neighbours got the 6pm slot when it was a choice of one or the other. Had H&A been the dominant player then Neighbours would be just 1:45pm and thats it.
It's just 2007 all over again, with Freemantle media wanting the UK broadcaster to pay for their failing soap, they tried it with the BBC who said no, then got a better deal with C5. If C5 now say no, Freemantle will punt it out to other interested parties, C5 will then see a rival sniffing around, so will buck under pressure of not wanting to loose 1 million viewers at lunchtime and a deal will be struck.

It’s quite different circumstances this time around however compared to 2007.
The soap is solely being made for a British audience. 10Peach will have a budget of peanuts and without British backing, the soap will have ended many years ago.
Channel 5 having to bear the brunt of the cost of running a whole production unit for a soap situated halfway across the world, they’ll be thinking long and hard as to whether it’s all worth it - as it will undoubtedly be a great expense.
Big Brother was a big ratings winner for them, but there comes a time that when ratings become stagnant, how long can it really be sustainable for? Hence why BB came to an end for the channel. And possibly why Neighbours is at risk.
They can only rely on the loyal audience that most likely migrated from the BBC 14 years ago. Once that dwindles, then the soap will be dead and buried. Channel 5 really have to think when that will be, and if they don’t see a long term future for the soap then it makes full sense financially to axe it. If Channel 5 decide against it, I can’t see any other British broadcaster prepared to foot the bill for just over a million viewers going into downfall.

The lunchtime broadcast doesn’t get a million, but about 600,000. Combined with teatime it’s about a million a day, putting it way above Hollyoaks (C4/E4 combined)

If it did go I wouldn't be so sure Home and Away would be parachuted back into the 6pm slot - they're quite happy targeting an older audience nowadays. Indeed I suspect they'd look to get out of the Home and Away deal at the next chance too
As for other interest - politics may prevent BBC3 as I think they already had to reduce the number of planned acquisitions, although it's an obvious fit. E4 seems Aussie obsessed lately and it would fit quite nicely after Hollyoaks at 7.30pm. It would fit on ITV2 too but don't think they'd be interested.

Also worth remembering Neighbours is a nice little box ticking exercise for Network 10, counting towards their local Aussie made productions they have to broadcast. If Neighbours leaves 10Peach, then that's a hole to fill, and the Friends repeats with fill the slot on Fridays will be no good extended to Mon-Thurs as it would count towards their Aussie quota.
6:30pm is a bit of a dead slot on 10Peach, so be having a cheap Aussie drama in it kills 2 birds with one stone, filling the slot and box ticking for the Aussie regulator.
C5 prob just want Network 10 to cover more of the costs. Like I say, a Viacom wide deal would be a better solution between them and Fremantle. Plenty of European Viacom channels where Neighbours could fill in any slots where Viacom are thin on content.

What's the breakdown of the audience that watch it on 5 at the moment in terms of age? Can't see it been amazing for the under 30s these days considering its been off the beeb so long. So can't imagine E4, ITV 2 etc touching it with a barge pole - and I'm a Neigbours fan!

Well I guess it's only a nice little cheap drama if it's heavily subsidised by a channel half way across the world!
I wonder if the quota would be as easily filled with cheapo reality shows, or is it drama specific?
Edit - it is a drama quota I've found out. Although with Australia being 4 episodes a week for a while now, they must have been filling it quite comfortably before then

Unless it isn’t making money for Channel 5 at all, in which case no need for 4 episodes per week.

Realistically how long can we carry on having 5 episodes a week, when they have 4, before we’re quite a way ahead?

It's been a much-loved part of our schedule for more than a decade, and we'd like to thank the cast, Fremantle and all of the production team for their fantastic work on this iconic series.
We'd also of course like to thank the fans for their loyal support of Neighbours across the years.
We recognise that there will be disappointment about this decision, however our current focus is on increasing our investment in original UK drama, which has strong appeal for our viewers.
Looks like we're just waiting on a Network 10/Fremantle statement.

It’s not like there is anywhere for it go, with it effectively being a UK production. It’s probably too expensive for E4 and ITV 2 if Channel 5 can’t make it work and I can’t see E4 showing any interest.
I do wonder if 10 pulled out first and Channel 5 don’t want to make up the shortfall.
The trouble is once it went Channel 5, it was never going to end up anywhere else, so allowed 5 to keep pushing the amount it paid down. I do wonder if they’d probably being paid more per episode if it had remained on the BBC.

I think C5 with live to regret this decision. H&A on its own at 13:15 with sink further in the ratings, the afternoon movie slot at 14:15 will suffer too without a consistent lead in from Neighbours.
Fremantle will no doubt be looking for a new UK broadcaster, which I suspect will have a chance of getting a deal somewhere. My money is on BBC One or BBC Two daytime, with a THREE repeat.

Budgets are shrinking and you’d lose something else, which would probably take production away from the UK regions. I can’t see the BBC being interested.

Perhaps something like BritBox could try funding it for 6 months to see if it drives any subscribers. But I can’t see people using a streaming service for a soap.
