You're right. I hope that was the intention, but even if it wasn't it's lovely to see all the same.

One thing I'm curious about is the way the idents are shot with the almost-circular panning. I wonder if that style might carry over to the upcoming ident package that got pushed back.

Yes I thought that as well, and it would be a good modern spin on the rotating globes of old if done correctly.

I must admit, they are very good idents and great to a day, evening and night version like the 1980s/early 1990s. I did first think it was a bit lazy just to return to Aardman yet again as a default company, especially as they’ve been used before, but I can’t help but love the execution.

Agreed, the tree is ideal as a central focal point/symbol for the idents.

And it ties in with the 2020 Zog/Gruffalo idents, as 4 out of those 5 had a Christmas tree as THEIR central symbol, too.

Spinning trees are more of a BBC2 thing aren't they?

I was also trying to pick up any hints about the new BBC One idents. I was half-expecting the spinning globe motif from the blip/trails to make an appearance.

Granted. I was thinking more of the slowly rotating central object evoking the slow spinning globe! Maybe just me...

There's something a bit of a shame at seeing full versions days before launch. Long gone is the excitement of hitting the VCR to record a long playout Smile

No, I get a similar feeling too. If the new regular idents is the camera spinning around an object/scene then that's quite a nice concept - more subtle than ending on an overhead circular shot (Circles) or an actual spherical object (Balloon) but still with a circle theme running through them. Throw in the lens effect and alternate times of the day and there could be a good package there.

As to Christmas...yeah, they're lovely. Beautifully animated scenes. Just a shame about the logo obscuring the top of the tree (d'oh!), although that's only the same as the logo being over the bottom of the tree on one of last year's.

They're looking even better on a second viewing. As close to perfection as they could get I think. I'm sure kids will appreciate them but there is something quite nostalgic about them too.

I think you’re on to something here. It certainly fits with the spinning circles used in trails.

Scrooge here: My God a whole month of those, they are very annoying on the first watch. Esp the jingle bells barring.

I'm from Bristol but find Ardman animations just annoying.

BBC One Christmas Idents 2021 - Joe - 30-11-2021

I would assume discussion was had about whether to place the BBC logo behind the top of the tree. I’m trying hard not to be disappointed by that detail (I bet the artists were) but no matter I guess. They’re still great.

BBC One Christmas Idents 2021 - Brekkie - 30-11-2021

Yet - it looks fine on the first one but awkward on the second and third. You could almost get away with saying the BBC is the star sat on top of the tree, but really it just looks in the way.

Maybe the circular panning idea for the idents works to go with the new graphics. But I don't know how it'll work in this new ident package that might be coming in 2022.

BBC One Christmas Idents 2021 - JK1985 - 30-11-2021

On a side note, shall we guess that BBC Two, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 will be reusing their older Christmas idents for 2021?

BBC One Christmas Idents 2021 - Andrew - 30-11-2021

They look great, really christmassy

The only negative, won’t it be quite hard to talk over the Carol ‘singing’ in the third one? They’ll have to turn the sound down to almost mute?
