One thing that caught my eye in that, why and when was Look East broadcast from Shanghai? Shanghai is in the East I guess but technically not in the East that Look East usually covers...

It was indeed. I think they broadcast Look East from there for the first week of the Beijing Olympics.

Looking at the tributes to him the day after he left, there doesn't seem to be anything what so ever to suggest he was forced out or left for any reason other than he felt it was time for him to retire.
It was even mentioned that he had always said that he wanted to just leave with no fuss one day, and that is exactly what he did.
Sometimes a presenter leaving gets almost too much coverage, and that can take a programme off track.
Fair play to him, and I hope he has a long and enjoyable retirement.

Presumably just playing on the "Look East" title? Quite an extravagance.
Unthinkable now, of course. (Imagine, say, South Today coming from e.g. Johannesburg if a major sporting event was being held in South Africa)
