CBS This Morning relaunches as "CBS Mornings" - AxiosBrit67 - 31-08-2021

W. Knight post_id=37084 time= user_id=1671 Wrote:“CBS Mornings” sounds a bit generic too: it's more like a department specializing in daytime programme arrangements instead. Perhaps an advantage of this name change is no more confusion with ITV's (unrelated) same-name show?

I believe this is a reason for CBS to changing its morning programmes. "CBS This Morning" was appeared with this name from 1987 until 1999 and since 2012 until 6th of September this year, whereas ITV's (unrelated) This Morning, which was originally produced by Granada Television, launched on 3 October 1988 is still going strong as daytime show a'la BBC's Morning Live.

I'm going to keep an open mind to the set and graphics. But, when I heard that CBS Sunday Morning (which is hideously outdated) theme, I didn't actually think that was going to be for the new show. Using such an old-fashioned theme doesn't really go well with the new 'state-of-the-art' studio (as I think they've called it). And as for the name change - why ? I can't see how changing the name to a similar but worse one is in any way going to help the show.

That theme tune sounds awful - like something out of the 70s. Graphics not much better either.

How distant a third are they - as someone said in the other thread continually revamping things does little more than ensure they remain in third place.

I don't understand how harking back to the heritage of CBS Sunday Morning so much AND moving to Times Square fit together. Seems to pull the show in two different directions.

They demonstrate this themselves. In the discussion after the clip, they talk about the legacy of CBS News and Sunday Morning as serious storytellers then Gayle has to remind us that they'll "have fun too". Very confused.

It's a shame that over time they seem to have stripped away pretty much everything that made CBS This Morning distinct when it first launched. Looking back the original studio was actually a little bit too dark but otherwise looked great, and was accompanied by a lovely theme, some nice distinguishing features and it all looked and felt quite different to the rest of the morning offer.

In contrast, whenever I see clips now the programme looks and feels very similar to its counterparts, and moving to another studio with a set that comprises pretty much entirely of screens feels a little uninspired. I'm sure it will look fine but I think that these screen-heavy sets lack any depth and can feel a little sterile. And whilst I appreciate the heritage of the Sunday Morning theme, to an outsider it sounds absolutely bizarre and completely incongruous with the CBS News theme that everything was sort-of following.

I'll watch on with interest but I don't think this will be an improvement on what came before.

Kind of sad they are leaving their current set, it was the best looking of the US Network morning show sets. I will say, the reasoning why they won't be using the windows , one of them is that the Old TRL studio, which this is, is right across the street from where GMA is done [Image: ncs_TRL-MTV_0009.JPG]

That would be awkward

Kind of like how they dug up the CBS This Morning name before, now they are brining back Morning, where CBS Sunday Morning started from and was the last remnant of that program. They also once used the name "CBS News Saturday Morning" back when they launched that before "The Early Show" launched.

I'm getting they are keeping the show focused on "Hard News" the first hour(harder than GMA and Today) then doing features like you would find on CBS This Morning's 2nd hour currently, with also some features you'd see on CBS This Morning Saturday, and Sunday Morning, with longer form stories and etc. Different than GMA's last hour and half where it's more focused on crime, celebrities and cooking and stuff , they are going to be continuing with arts features, interviews, stuff they find fun etc...

I really hope the background won't just be New York City, like you're watching WCBS' local news, if they really wanted to be different they'd have different city backdrops from around America, showing it's a morning show for all America or something.

The theme is alright from what I've heard, it's the CBS Sunday Morning theme with some modification it's fine, hope they keep the normal one for Sunday since it's tempo feels like Sunday. I hope the new graphics on screen look good, I hate the current lower 3rds and stuff.

The one thing CBS needs to stop doing is changing their news programming up so much, The morning show and evening news, have just been changed constantly in the past 10 years, they need to stick with something. I know Charlie Rose kind of screwed up their morning show consistency (though he was in his 70's, they should have planned for him not to be there long in general) but they've been through multiple non Gayle King co-hosts since he was fired and it's tedious. Not as bad as what they've been doing at the Evening news but close.

I hope it's a good show , either that or we wait for The Early Show name to come back in a few years.

Here's a list of every morning show (besides Captain Kangaroo having a slot) CBS Has used since the 1950's

The Morning Show (1954-1955) (Tonight Show Host, Jack Paar once hosted it )
Good Morning! (1955-1957)
The CBS Morning News (1965-1979)
Morning (1979-1982, Sunday Morning was retained)
The CBS Morning News (1982-1987, the name is currently used for a the Early Morning Half hour newscast)
The Morning Program (1987)
CBS This Morning (1987-1999)
The Early Show (1999-2012)
CBS This Morning (2012-2021)
CBS Mornings (2021-)

I think the 20 year rating success for CBS Sunday Morning is a great legacy to building off. Incorporating the logo and the theme is a nod to its legacy. So its unlikely they will be adding cooking segments and music guests.
I respectfully disagree; just because one particular format doesn't work and another does won't mean if you mash the successful format across 6 additional days a week you'll have a success.

The name, frankly, makes no sense (The Early Show wasn't exactly great either) - as others have said it sounds like a directorate within CBS, as opposed to a programme.

The theme music is hideous, the CBS Sunday Morning theme isn't great either; it's a piece of classical music far predating television, and the modern world - perhaps it would be best if it was left there?

Quote:I dont think its bad. It has been used for on DECADES on CBS. I think its smart on CBS part to draw from the CBS SUNDAY MORNING DNA

Just because something has been used for decades doesn't again mean it's any good, or should have extended use. Look at the current BBC News music - people are yearning for change after 2 decades of it. I fail to see how having a similar logo, and similar music is anything to do with the 'DNA' of a light magazine programme being brought across to what is a topical morning current affairs programme. I'll be honest, if that music was waking me up it would get irritating PDQ. I expect it lasts 3 months, maximum before they get Joel Beckerman in to rehash his election 2016 music for them...

Well you might think its hideous, as it your right. But the show has been on for ages and is extremely popular and an integral part of the CBS News BRAND and part of its news heritage and DNA. Just because the BBC uses a heart monitor for a theme, its works for them. Look at at the outdated Channel 4 News theme. its continues to be used and its sounds straight out of the 80s, but people love it.
For example the theme for WPVI ABC 6 Philadelphia. They have been using the same theme since the 70s. Its really outdated. But its loved and memorable. People went crazy when they tried to update it so they restored it.

So just because it means nothing to you because you dont have a habit of getting up every Sunday in your PJs with a cuppa and the Sunday Newspaper to watch CBS Sunday Morning doesnt mean it doesnt have value to the CBS News BRAND. And that matter obviously more than trying to go all-white sterile set and beeping heart monitors theme.

I'll agree CBS This Morning was an alright name to use, never was against the Early Show name , but understand why some wouldn't like it. CBS Mornings does seem kind of weak, the main focus is of course they want people to remember the CBS part. This is the new CBS News President trying to put their mark on the network, like the last ones wanted to do. I don't think they are going to make it Like "Sunday Morning" every day, I think it's going to stay the same and that was just PR Puffery, CTM's format is currently News the first hour , news features like stories from 60 minutes and etc during the 2nd hour, Saturday show has live music and a food segment.

On the theme music, we aren't fully sure how they are going to use it on weekdays, but the theme on Sunday Morning is elementally apart of the programme and it fits it since the show has arts features and etc. Maybe it will be a bad feeling for the weekdays and Saturday or it might sound good, we'll find out when they use it.

I can see the logic of trying to unify the morning brands, though I don't know why "CBS Mornings" is now seen as a better fit than "CBS This Morning". In any event, I'm not convinced that it will make any difference to the ratings.

The "new" (to the programme, anyway) studio looks nice at a first glance - and I agree with Mouseboy33 that the common DNA of the sets across the various CBS News properties is welcome.

Hmm - not really sure about this change and can't see it working. CBS Sunday Morning does seem to be the most successful of CBS's morning shows so I understand them wanting to borrow from that but what viewers want on Sunday morning is often different from say a weekday morning when they don't have time to sit around.
'CBS Mornings' feels a much more generic name too than 'CBS This Morning' - 'CBS Mornnings' sounds like it could apply to the whole morning schedule rather than a particular programme.

As much as that clip too suggests they'll still focus on hard news, I'm not sure if their actions will necessarily match that. Moving to a softer opening sequence, having a 'soft' green room on set and replacing an experienced anchor in Anthony Mason with an ex-NFL player feels like it's trying to replicate the other morning shows like Today or GMA rather than trying to be distinctive.
The presentation too looks generic and frankly a bit old-fashioned. Even if that new theme is associated with CBS Sunday Morning it is not pleasant to listen to and you could tell me that title sequence too was from the 80s and I'd believe you. It feels odd too to talk about moving to the heart of New York and then going to a studio full of screens and not showing a real New York view so you may as well be anywhere. The slightly dated looking titles but very modern studio feels an odd clash. Their current studio looks a bit more distinctive to be honest.

NBC's Today also have Bryant Gumbel as co-host from 1982 to 1997 despite having no experience as news journalist. But the difference is Gumbel having a background as sportscaster rather than as a ex-NFL player.

I mean Nate has hosted 'Good Morning Football' for five years now, and serves as a CBS pundit.
