I'm a huge TV theme fan and I love many of the ones already posted in this thread. I have too many to declare a favourite - that would be absolutely impossible - but no TV theme thread would be complete without these 80s classics:

Also the sad Prisoner Cell Block H theme, played when a character departed, was a beautiful piece of music:

I also have a penchant for this - takes me right back to childhood:

If I think of any more I'll post a follow-up.

Who would win in a theme-music top trumps fight between Mike Post and Simon May?

Another all time favourite piece of music from TV.

My Top 3 TV themes ever…

At 3, it’s a theme tune that’s been going 33 years, but this iteration is it’s longest lasting version used for 14 years between 1995 and 2009. It’s This Morning.

At 2, it’s already been posted before but it’s a corker. It’s Bruce’s Price is Right. I love the saxophone on it but as its been posted before, I’ll post a version from it’s American original where it came from - this music was used as the pre-roll for the credits on Bruce’s version and is sans-Saxophone.

And my number 1, my favourite of all time has to be this pumped up theme tune from the short lived game show Cilla’s Moment of Truth. It lasted for 4 series before being rebranded Celebrities Under Pressure and losing this fabulous music score, but this is what made the show for me, along with the magical rotating sofa!

I remember people saying it was a rip-off of this pop song. I guess they are similar at the start and then when the trumpet synth comes in about half way.

No end of cases unfortunately down the years where a commercial song has been ripped off (or did the ripping off) in part or otherwise. That's for a court to decide.

There are after all presumably only so many combinations of notes and tunes that sound plausible and are nice, and once you get outside of that range you're into either sounding like a cat being strangled territory or woefully off-key.

Have to say this was the best BBC breakfast theme. When you got the long intro you knew something had kicked off overnight- Gulf War and Lockerbie come to mind.

Three of the best theme music compositions of the last 20+ years

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? (1998 - 2007 / 2018 - Present)

The Weakest Link

I know I’ve already given my Top 3 above, but reading my post again, I can’t believe I left out my all time favourite. Therefore this is my honorary mention.

It’s It’ll Be Alright On The Night. Such a soulful and classic piece of music which no future iteration of the theme tune captures bar the original. It barely resembles the type of show that it represents which is what makes the Denis Norden era of IBAOTN so intriguing and watchable - what with this tune, his anecdotes and the way the show was edited to get more laughs out of the audience. A perfect combo!

And yes, it’s another sax tune, think I must have a thing for it.

I'm pretty fond of Deal or No Deal's USA theme.
