If you had popped along a bit earlier or later you would have seen a number of ‘vintage’ cars of the Sex Pistols era outside the front of the building - for filming purposes I would presume.
Was there a blue Cortina?

It never made it to the South Bank!

Eammon Andrews and Freddie Mercury probably wouldn't quite have had the same notoriety!

The interview did good business for Thames though, that clip one of their most sold and licensed bit of footage. It didn't go so well for EMI though

Legend has it they rang up Branson the next day and virtually begged him to take them on instead.

Legend also has it one member of the public was so offended by the fruity language that he kicked in his television set. That must have hurt.

Quote:One last show at TLS!

In January 2021 a press release revealed that a Danny Boyle-directed 6 episode drama series about the Sex Pistols was in pre-production. The show is called Pistol and is being made by FX, a subsidiary of Disney. Although FX is a US TV channel, shows made for them are often shown in the UK on other networks and streaming services.

My understanding is that the drama is based at TLS - with the first 7 floors of Kent House being occupied by production offices. I am informed that all 5 studios in the building will be used as shooting stages, with Studio 3 being made to resemble the old Riverside Studios during the 1970s for one particular scene. Filming is due to commence in March 2021. At least the empty studios are being used for something productive before being torn down, which is a small gem of good news.
I guess they are recreating the infamous Bill Grundy interview for this

I remember seeing it at the time. IMHO the 'outrage' was ramped up by the press - so nothing's changed there, though it was pretty cringe-worthy even at the time.
Location-wise, I thought it was at Euston Road where the Thames TV was based for news? The building had Capital Radio there too later on.

It was, but they'd have trouble filming there seeing as it's been demolished for a quarter of a century.

Thought so, bit odd using the old LWT site though. As a viewer I always considered them very different companies and the fact that the 'Pistols interview was so entrenched in Thames' history kind of niggles me a bit and it's not that close either.

It is doubling as the Thames studios though, as you can see by the signage they put on the front.

I think the point is it's a very era-appropriate mockup.

"Legend has it they rang up Branson the next day and virtually begged him to take them on instead."

Nope I don't think so as they signed to A&M records after EMI and before they went to Bransons Virgin.

As it says in the article quoted on page 1, the production company are using the old TLS studios and offices. So why not use the frint of the building as a location, especially as it looks fairly similar.

It's not a bad likeness, both buildings were built at a similar time. Its certainly better than the building The Crown used for the outside of ITN... but then do these locations have to be that accurate?

The ITN scenes used in The Crown were from the 60s when ITN were in Television House in Kingsway (the same building Redifusion were in)
That building still exists (bang opposite Bush House) They could have used it in the series, but didn't. Perhaps because the ground floor is now a large Herman Miller posh chair showroom.

Anyway, they also referred to ITN as 'International Television News', so hey!

The Euston Centre where Thames was (having moved from the building mentioned above in 1969) as said, has gone. Capital Radio were next door in Euston Tower, that's very much still there.
Some people thought Capital occupied the whole tower, and their transmitter was on the roof, neither was true of course

And finally, here's a pic of Thames Euston

I can't find them, but Transdiffusion also tweeted more pictures a couple of weeks ago. The resemblance of the Kent House mock up is excellent

If anyone was wondering what happened to the 'On air/Rehearsal' signs above Studios 1 and 2 at TLS, it seems Ant and Dec have them... https://www.instagram.com/p/CNnfl8PAZsn/

I guess you can't be surprised, their career over the last 20-odd years was basically made in those two studios.

Not a flattering photo, it looks dirty already! As you say the only thing left of The Euston Centre is the tower itself, the bit where Capital was was stripped back to the bare structure and rebuilt

I used to pass the site quite often about 20 years ago and there was still some of it left around the back of the tower, they'd tried to make it look a bit nice by having a big mural of multicoloured electric fan on the side.

There were a couple of other media companies there - Satellite Media Services across the courtyard from Capital, they distributed material for ILR such as IRN and the Network Chart. The last remaining section with the fan mural was home to The Community Channel. One of the replacement buildings was the offices of Fox Kids.... and a block of flats around the back, now demolished was Kenneth William's flat

I thought they demolished TLS, nice to see it still in use though.
