New BBC Sport Virtual Studio debuts - Stuart - 30-03-2021
The point of 'Virtual Reality'/CSO sets is to mimic a real environment, or create something that could never exist in reality for dramatic purposes.
I'm not sure why a sports broadcast meets either of those requirements.
Even my Sister (who is not the sharpest knife in the drawer) knows that it's all fake. :o

Indeed! And I think I'm right in saying (relying on my memory of having watched lots of the coverage of that games when I was 8!) that that ultra-wide view of the set, with the tiny presenters, was only seen as part of the opening titles, whereas in the coverage itself we only had two or three shots, none of which were especially wide.

I'd say the fake background of the flowers of Augusta works quite well, certainly a nicer look than in the second sport studio like they were last year.

It definitely works better with a more authentic backdrop like that, but I still feel it’s too much background and not enough “set”. Just some thicker window frames with some more colour or texture would help a lot. The current setup makes the space look large, empty and soulless - like they’re sat in a vast departure lounge at Heathrow Terminal 5 which is empty due to the pandemic.

Whilst the virtual space has "sunlight" casting shadows from the window frames (when the camera is pointed at the screen), the shadows are falling in the wrong direction based on the light hitting the background element.

I think the screens look a bit lost in the vast space too and having bigger screens, including one central on the back wall, would help with the backdrop issues too.
May be a quick change of backdrop between MOTD and The Masters at the highlights - to be honest the time difference meaning highlights can't air till after midnight has me wondering whether with no live rights The Masters highlights is value for money.

Formula E also coming from the new virtual set. I think that confirms it’s a different studio to the regular football one. I suspect they’ve turned the secondary sport studio into a green screen one as it seems to be replacing that when it would usually be on screen. Like it’s football counter part it looks better with darker branding as today. The backdrop looks a bit rubbish still though.
I think the football set works better, because it’s not trying to hard to look like a real set. Virtual sets need to be a bit abstract or look like they could be real in the way ITV News does it. This general sport studio looks like something off the shelf. I also wish there was some elements that linked the two looks together, like maybe the same desk, seats or floor. Unless they plan to change the football one too.

Given Formula E produce pre/post race content for all broadcasters, presented by Vernon Kay, so it seems a bit of a wildcard that the BBC fire up a studio in Salford to do their own thing.

The backdrop looks a bit rubbish still though.For me the pic of the green screen set Robin Cousins posted (see page 1) looks too big for it to be the second sports set repurposed IMO but I guess it could just about fit. Agree it does look very generic "off the shelf", and consistency between sets and the traveling studios used for live matches seems to have long gone out of the window. They seem to get a nice desk and then the next time something comes along another one is used.

Also I thought we knew that this was a separate studio? As far as I am aware it's not even at dock10 like MOTD is - it's another studio at Media City built specifically for the BBC's use.

Being a motorsport fan, I watched some of the BBC Sport FormulaE coverage from the studio.
The grainy stock Rome skyline photo didn't help at all with the guest closeups.. But.
If that's how the 2020/1 Olympics are going to be done in the Summer, then with a couple of proper 'flats' in the Japanese white backed/black lined traditional wall style, and a live shot of Tokyo using one of the 4KHD OBS beautycam skyline shots, it'll look very nice.

I guess the green screen studio (in Salford?) is a more 'covid secure' option than hiring multiple spaces on location. It also allows them to test things out prior to the Euros and Olympics, both of which I seem to recall are now opting for UK based studios for presenting. Better for technical problems to occur on a lesser sporting event and therefore hopefully be ironed out.

It’s certainly very Lightwell, with stair case etc. I don’t know if that’s meant to be the other side of the set, that we hadn’t seen or the same side.
I think it’s all very sterile. I would have preferred them to have based the look on the MOTD one, which I think was made by a different company. Is this studio using the same engine as the football one, I wonder?
Also, I’m assuming Inverdale has now fully left the BBC, as well rather than just the rugby coverage?
