BritBox SVOD - Brekkie - 15-07-2021

The BritBox "soapbox" additions don't seem much to shout about - the Brookside (and Hollyoaks) episodes added seem to be the ones already on All4.

ITV's half year results are out which reveals 555k subscribers to Britbox in the UK. Surprisingly Hub+ is not too far behind it with 452k which is up 10%. No idea if the Britbox numbers means it's been a success, or how many of those are free subscriptions through phone contracts, but it's telling that Britbox has had significantly more advertising than Hub+ (IMO) yet they're not far from each other in numbers.

Considering Disney+ got ten times that number in a shorter time frame it doesn't look great but of course it also has much less original content.

TBF BritBox and Disney+ are aimed at different audiences.

Spitting Image was probably the main reason for the spike of subscriptions. It could do with adding on Roku and Android TV, but I'd think the Amazon Channel will help boost sales.

I admit I'm not even sure why it's not available on Roku, I'd have expected it to be. You can get it in a roundabout way on there via Amazon, but even that wasn't available for several months.

Spitting Image returns on September 11th for 9 weeks.

BritBox SVOD - VMPhil - 15-08-2021

I got a free trial of BritBox with EE, and have just finished watching this from 2008. It's modern enough to be in HD, but the soundtrack is in mono?! How does stuff like this even happen? (And yes it was made in stereo, there are other clips online to confirm).

Sometimes it feels like in the rush to get these streaming services running, the quality control goes out the window. I know for others it's a really minor thing, but stuff like this is why I don't subscribe to any of them.

Interesting that Britbox are adding a ‘Britbox Mysteries’ channel on Pluto TV. Can’t see it on mine so not sure if it’s just on the US version, but it says it’s a “6 month exclusive” where I’ve read about it.

It's not on Pluto UK.

BritBox SVOD - Sweetcorn - 26-08-2021

Does anyone know when britbox will be available on Roku??? Read it's on Amazon prime app but can't find anything ? Is it still going to happen or progress getting britbox available on more platforms stalled ?

The Catherine Tate Show needs deinterlacing. How did they get such bad copies?

BritBox SVOD - Night Thoughts - 28-08-2021

There seems generally to be an air of sloppiness about Britbox - the write-ups for programmes are really poor (and calling episodes "eps" looks awful if you're trying to sell classic programmes to an older audience).

It just looks like it hasn't quite worked out who it's for and what its strengths are.

100% this. To me it just feels like a service full of the shows most of our parents have sat on shelves on DVDs that they never watch. We had a month trial and barely used it.

I probably said this before on TV Forum but I find their reality strategy baffling. They were showing endless Britbox ads during Love Island for their reality offering but there's barely anything on there that isn't available on the free streamers and if you're into that genre I expect you've seen it all before.

This has got to be one of the more depressing attempts at beefing out the reality page, who is going to click on any of these? Being led to an episode page where if you're desperate to bear witness to the appearance of "Tom Zanetti" you've got to skip through a completely out of context episode to find their three minute section.

They have a tendency to do similar sections across all genres and even on the homepage which to me highlights just how light they are on content.

A really strange mix of dusty crime drama and comedy and a limited selection of reality that they're desperate to push.
