I wonder if in time we may see the reverse of the current setup on freeview when it comes to DVB-T and DVB-T2. At present PSB3 contains the HD channels for BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Five (etc), and currently once COM7 is cleared it'll be the only multiplex to use DVB-T2. Maybe in time PSB1 (or PSB2) will be the only PSB multiplex to use DVB-T, and will hold the SD channels for BBC, ITV etc to provide a legacy service for older Freeview boxes.

It would certainly be nice if COM5 and/or COM6 could change to DVB-T2 given that COM7 is eventually scheduled for closure, particularly as at present some BBC HD channels use COM7.
Yes, converting PSB2 to HD and having PSB1 host ITV, C4 and C5 in SD as a temporary stop gap whilst ITV2/3/4 and E4/More4/Film4 switch to HD is in theory quite possible. COM7 and COM8 should always have been designed as ultimately the replacement for COM5/6 so that when they required closing it would be a DVB-T SD mux closing, with a DVB-T2 mux then taking those channels and upgrading some to HD.

Sky have been giving out HD equipment as standard for the best part of a decade I think so these closures shouldn't affect a huge number of people. Presumably they could request an upgrade. Freesat may be a bit trickier. For those with Freeview though Smart TV's probably come to the rescue here as anyone upgrading in the last few years will have found themselves getting Freeview HD as standard.

Longer than that, Sky+HD came along in 2006, but that platform hasn't seen new hardware since 2014. The older hardware has been phased out update wise but I think all bar the original Thomson box still gets the occasional update when Sky change the behind the scenes configuration.

You can request upgrades from SD boxes (or Sky+HD) but it will be to Q. They don't do HD boxes or the legacy packages anymore, though there are plenty around second hand you still need an active subscription in the first place to pair them up. The thing with Sky+HD boxes (which isn't a "problem" as such) is that despite the fact they are so old now hardware wise a large chunk are still fully working on the original hardware, they are rock-solid in that regard. One of the benefits of eating Amstrad who made most of the boxes in the first place bringing them in-house.

In some regions, the Digital Switchover Help Scheme provided qualifying households with a very basic Freesat SD set-top-box. In some areas of the southwest, satellite will provide a better or consistent range of channels. Along pockets of the north coast of Devon, it will provide the correct regional service. Therefore, I suspect it's this cohort of users that ITV need to be reaching out to and it may not be clear how many of these older boxes are still in circulation in what is nearly 15 years since DSO in the region.

I wasn't aware Freesat boxes were used in the scheme. I simply assumed it would be all-Freeview. Did the scheme pay for dish installation, etc.?

A lot of blocks (tower blocks, social terraced housing, etc) had communal equipment installed on them as part of DSO, so it would just be a case of connecting cables to the faceplates. The communal equipment usually comprised of a regular aerial for Freeview, satellite dish for Sky/Freesat and (for some reason) an FM antenna.

Yes, it did.

I am aware of someone living in Ripley, Derbyshire, where prior to DSO, the strongest signal was from the Yorkshire TV region. The switchover help scheme contractor determined that Freesat was the most suitable option after switchover and the person received a basic dish installation with one Freesat SD box - possibly Goodmans or Bush?

If that person had still been living there with that set-up, they would have been affected by the changes to Central East. But there's a lot of Derbyshire that gets Central West, so it's not quite the big difference compared to someone in the Tyne Tees region getting Granada instead from next week.

Not too long now, BBC One HD is to be regionalised in England by the end of 2022. With this, we should see finally changes to ITV as well on Freeview which currently uses macro regions on ITV HD.

It's an ambitious target for the BBC to have regional HD by the end of 2022.. They have been working on various iterations of an HD gallery refresh project for the regional centres for at least the last 5 years. None of them have met the technical objectives fully, nor the ambition to allow regional news output to be produced with less technical staff - hence the delays

The BBC England technical infrastructure in the regional centres is almost exclusively SD still & at least 15 years old..

I'm taking the 2022 date as when BBC 1 HD be regionalised, (and thus you will be able to view your regional programme in upscaled SD, and not necessarily in HD) and NOT when all regions will be producing their programmes in HD

In any case there are three regions and one sub-region that would be able to output in HD when they're regionalised.

London
South West (excluding Channel Islands, except for Spotlight branded bulletins)
North West
Look East (West)

I'm not sure how much of BBC Cambridge's 'infrastructure' is located in Norwich though ?

Can it operate completely free standing from Norwich ?(like Oxford can from Southampton) or is it akin to Jersey/Plymouth ?

ITV SD regional shutdown on satellite for some regions - technologist - 08-04-2021

Cambridge is totally free of Norwich
Also all BBC newsgathering has been HD for many years ..
It's just the studio and network infrastructure whuch is SD ..

ITV SD regional shutdown on satellite for some regions - London Lite - 08-04-2021

Also worth noting that when Cambridge provide the pan-regional bulletins, viewers who receive Look East (East) from Norwich will get the news in HD, yet when it returns to Norwich output, it'll revert to upscaled SD.

STV Central has the same issue when STV North provide the bulletins, they get it in HD, but revert to upscaled SD when it comes from Glasgow.

Just the same as animating Aston's when Cambridge broadcast pan-regionally though it doesn't happen as often as I'd expected when Cambridge started broadcasting full 1830 programmes.

ITV SD regional shutdown on satellite for some regions - Stanley Matravers - 08-04-2021

It's better that the BBC One HD channel itself is at least able to show regional news programmes rather than the Red Screen Of Death, even if many of them may be in upscaled SD for a fair while yet.

Whilst the recent announcement is of course welcome, the timescale being "by the end of 2022" still doesn't feel soon enough. It should be "by the end of next week" (or something), as we've already been waiting for what feels like aeons.

It's utterly pathetic that it hasn't happened long before now. Ditto, the lack of certain regions/sub-regions on Freeview ITV HD.

I remember a story about a field behind my Grandma's estate in Mansfield being covered on Central East from Waltham, which we got in Leicestershire - but my Grandma and everyone else who lived next to this field got Yorkshire from Belmont!
