I've said it before and I'll say it again - the BBC being forced to publish specific salary bands of high-earning talent/staff has not only been devasting for the corporation but has had its intended result (as seen with Global's poaching spree).
Being made to give their rivals a giant gift on a silver platter is something the corporation (which doesn't stand up and defend itself anywhere near as much as it should) should have fought hard against doing. As it is, Global is stripping the news division of high-profile presenters/reporters one lucrative offer after another.

The Telegraph is reporting that the BBC let Goodall go by choosing not to make a counter-offer to Global with the intention of him leaving due to him having a reputation as left-leaning.

It is very concerning if people are being let go from BBC News for being deemed "left leaning" for reporting in a manner that holds the government to account.

I suspect BBC "sources" are doing a lot of heavy lifting in that Telegraph article.
If Lewis had said to the BBC before yesterday's announcement he's had an offer from Global, it would probably have leaked.
On that note, in that photo with Emily Maitlis and Jon Sopel Lewis is wearing the same clothes he has in the PR pictures from Global. I assume the location, clearly not Central London, is where they were taken.
As I've said before you have to credit Global for the lengths they go to keep these negotiations under wraps until the official announcement.
