I think it’s the right move even though I’m not crazy about the name. I would maximise on the brands considering 4Music is aimed at the same audience.

Confirmation from C4 now that 4Music won't retain a slot on Freeview. Thought it might be worth dumping E4+1 to keep 4Music (I guess More4+1 will go with the closure of COM7).

Legendary also moves from E4 whilst Ninja Warrior Japan is added to the schedule.
This is where All4 really need to catch up with additional streaming channels. BOX used to be pretty decent on that front with the BOX+ app, website and red button service on 4Music but they've largely gone in recent years. Really with 4Music leaving Freeview it would be the perfect opportunity to push it, alongside BOX, as a selection of channels available via All4.

So will E4 Extra have a HD version also for satellite viewers? If E4's biggest comedy shows are moving there, would be a shame to only see them now SD only.

The easiest way to explain the change is this:
E4 Extra will launch using 4Music's existing channel slot (keeping the entertainment aspect of 4Music).
Box Hits will close, with 4Music moving to its old channel slot.
4Music will transition back to a channel focusing purely on music (keeping the music aspect of both Box Hits and 4Music).

It's weird to see the UK a bit behind when it comes to HD channels, at least to many continental European countries, even partly Italy.

Surely we're at the point where, on satellite and cable at least, they could close down the SD channels as surely pretty much everyone on them has a HD box now? Certainly on Virgin all active subscribers were moved to HD boxes years ago (and I think they turned off MPEG2 even for SD channels years back and it's all H.264 now, and they have turned off the SD versions of many channels, though not all). Not sure if it's the case for Sky, but there surely can't be many legacy boxes left there niw.
DTT of course is another story.

I was thought '4Laughs' would be a good name for the channel, however from what I've seen it doesn't look so bad as 'E4 Extra'.

I think all Channel 4 ever made themselves was Right To Reply and the first 4 years of T4 (if the latter counts as a programme rather than just continuity). And fairly obviously neither of those will get repeated (however much I'd like to see them!).
The thing I'd most like to see repeated is Brookside from the start, though I don't know if it will ever happen, just like how I doubt we'll see the 1972-89 "Emmerdale Farm" episodes shown again. Living showed up to around 1994-ish in the 90s and early 00s (sadly when we didn't have access to the channel) before Sky One took it, skipped over the best part of a year, juggled it around the schedules and quickly dropped it- I think it was being shoved out around 3AM at the end.
Interestingly I found a Brookside episode guide online a few years back, and it revealed every episode had a title (though never appeared on screen- and the last few months where it was basically treated as one long episode once a week still had 3 different "titles") and the show had several "series" a year. All aired continuously of course, though all the major changes that happened to the show (new and revised titles, new theme tune, going three times a week, going 16:9, the film look being added etc.) all co-incided with the start of what they classed as a "series". Apparently there were 70 "series" over the course of the show's 21 year run.
I can't find the actual website any more (it was very detailed with trivia and the likes and information about the Living and Sky One repeats) but this page has copied the episode guide part into text format:

Don't forget... Virgin will have to move the old 4Music out of the music section. Sky on the other hand did this years ago so they wont need to.

The reality is though archive channels increasingly rely on content from the last decade rather than the last century.
Back to what is happening and I hope E4 don't dump all their daytime comedy for reality reruns - for me the comedy should remain the backbone of the schedule with the older and lower profile comedies being what should move over to E4 Extra, especially if it's only being replaced by reruns of the likes of Don't Tell the Bride (which currently runs on 4Music).

It's a shame it's not like the US where they have several channels showing content from the 50s and 60s. Archive content, even black and white, doesn't seem to be the no-no there that it is here.
