In similar deal with BT Sport to the F1 with Sky. Although Quest would also be a contender for such a package now Discovery are part owners of BT Sport.

It was a competitive match, it was their play-off against Australia for the 1986 World Cup. The Australian leg was an 8.30am kick-off and broadcast live on Channel Four in October 1985. Of course, in those days C4 was basically ITV2.
In those days the Beeb and ITV would faithfully split all televised football 50-50, so they would always take it in turns to show an England game or have one leg each of a two-legged tie. I would assume that had the Beeb had that match in Australia they'd have shown it on BBC2 with Breakfast Time taking priority.
I was trying to remember what England match had been live on BBC2 but Sweden vs England, the Terry Butcher match of course that saw them qualify for the 1990 World Cup, was on BBC2 in September 1989, as was the match against Poland two years later where they qualified for Euro 92. Both of those were 6pm kick-offs and the news took priority on BBC1. Hard to imagine now sports rights go for millions but in those days England matches would work around existing schedules, not the other way round.
Different world. See also: BBC Wimbledon schedules where anything involving Murray (and I assume from this year, Radacanu) will see the schedules switched. I'm guessing in the old days there were far more immovable objects with that fortnight compared to today.

Well, there were schools programmes and the like, although schedules were far more regimented in those days. I know there was a stat that in the eighties sport made up 40% of BBC2's output for 2% of its budget so they did take some of it for granted a bit and it was considered the ultimate schedule filler. This is the great example, joining a live football match 15 minutes in so they could show Wogan as usual - https://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/schedules/service_bbc_one_london/1985-03-15#at-19.00
People say schedules are boring these days but the broadcasters are far more likely to move things around, in the eighties and nineties you might get EastEnders or Top of the Pops moved once or twice a year at most, and the schedules were often pretty mundane.

Not England matches, no, because they were almost never shown live in those days. In fact it wasn't until the start of BSB in 1990 that England home games were broadcast live as a matter of course.
Anyway, England played on Channel Five five times and didn't lose any of them.

Didn't the Rovers fire episode of Corrie famously move to 6pm or something for coverage of Mexico 86 - but they repeated it in primetime the next day?

Well you'll listed pretty much every football presenter around so chances are one of them might be correct.
Actually a shame Jeff Stelling signed up for another year on Soccer Saturday as that might have been a good shout - a bit of history with the channel, an easy way to instantly win over football fans and at around 10 matches a year not a huge commitment if he is wanting to scale down. Still a chance as Sky seem to have now joined BT in not having complete exclusivity over their talent.

Yes, before England vs Argentina I think - it was on at 6.15 and then repeated the next day at 9pm.
Obviously there's no way that kind of thing would happen these days - I remember Marcus Plantin being interviewed in the Radio Times when he was Controller of ITV in 1995 saying that he was now specifically making a point of working with Corrie and Emmerdale and discussing storylines with them, so ITV could give them decent slots and promotion when their big events were happening, and they could make sure they didn't clash with anything else they had planned, which seemingly hadn't happened before. That huge episode of Corrie going out during the World Cup illustrates that, although it also illustrates that the World Cup wasn't considered the massive event it was these days.

It's been officially announced that Channel 4 has signed a three-year deal to show England Nations League, Euro 2024 qualifying and friendly matches.
The deal encompasses 20 games between 2022 and 2024 and begins with England's Nations League match against Hungary on June 4th.

I wonder if Channel Four think the rights for qualifying for 2026 and 2028 might end up on a streaming platform and are going heavy on promoting the free to air aspect for that reason.

Interesting how we now know England for 2022-24 and the other nations for 2024-28 but not vice versa. Viaplay obviously not in a position to launch early enough for the 2022 package and seemingly not a longer deal on the table for the England games. Indeed wonder if the rights value has dropped given the recent ratings on ITV hasn't been spectacular.
UEFA probably somewhat happy to get the Nations League some FTA exposure too and give it a bit of credibility as so far it has been out of sight, out of mind.
