I can well believe that quite a lot wouldn't have been archived, to be honest. It reminds me of one of the big cheeses of BBC Sport saying that when he joined the Beeb in the seventies, one of his first jobs was to go through that week's Match of the Day, pick out the bits they wanted to keep in colour, and then throw the rest in the bin. Alright, that was the seventies, when most things were wiped anyway, but even in the nineties I can well imagine that they'd go through the show after broadcast, pick out the relevant bits for future compilations and the archive, then rely on a VHS copy for the rest of the show.

I do think it's best to take internet claims that "episodes are missing" with a pinch of salt though unless it's actually properly confirmed by someone who's actually in the know. Happens far too often that someone says something on an internet forum with nothing to actually back it up, and it somehow becomes treated as gospel. The person on the missing episodes forum who made the original post about episodes being missing is someone who acts as if he's someone in the know but when you look through his posts in detail, it's quite clear he actually isn't and he just pieces bits and bobs together he's got from elsewhere.

That's not uncommon these days though, even for stuff that most definitely does exist. Seems to be easier (and cheaper) for the producers to just pull a clip off YouTube or similar rather than properly source a copy.
And if another version of the story I heard was true- that the episodes do exist but the contents hadn't been properly catalogued- it would again mean it's just easier to grab a clip from where you know it is than have to spool through potentially thousands of tapes until you find what you're looking for.

AFAIK This is the pretty much it. When P24 was purchased by Carlton its archive was dumped with ITN source and simply not fully catalogued. As The BB wasn't a going concern it just wasn't deemed necessary. The recent appearence of old episodes on Screen Ocean appears to indicate that some kind of indexing or work with the archive is taking place.

I can easily see how it could possibly have started, some researchers wanted access to clips for various reasons and they were told the majority of episodes weren't available, in the sense that without them being properly catalogued meant they didn't know what was were, and in typical internet chinese whispers fashion, "not available" ended up morphing into "not existing".
I know there's been numerous examples where programmes haven't been available for broadcast or clip licensing for various reasons, and it's ended up being taken as them being "wiped", when in reality the tapes whereabouts have always been known, it's other things are caught up in red tape. I know the first series of WWTBAM was this for years, people acted suprised that the master tapes were "found" for Challenge to broadcast, when they'd never been "missing" to begin with, there were issues that needed resolving for them to be shown. Similar is the case with much of the TVS Archive- I believe most of the tapes are still there, the paperwork isn't- again, "non-availability" has been misintrepreted as "missing".

When they showed a clip in the revival of Phil Gayle meeting Will Smith the show using the newsreaders for interviews was something I didn't remember at all. There is another example here of Jasmine Lowson doing the same as a "Big Breakfast News Special".

Also the full version of the garage closing credits on this episode (plus both the 7am and 8am versions). The show looked so fresh here, though not sure why they gave it such a refresh knowing they were months away from Johnny leaving. Donna Air though really stands out as the weak link - for me of the semi-regular third presenters (which also included Gail Porter and Sara Cox) used over 1999/2000 she was the weakest.
P.S. The last verse of the Friday Song fairly apt at the moment as well.

When those titles were introduced in May 2000 they didn't know he was leaving. In terms of the house, it made sense to do it up for the return of Denise. The cost to redecorate isn't really much for several months worth of daily television.
The clip above is from the week Paula died. They referred to it briefly the day after it happened with Johnny acknowledging it was a sad day for everyone on the show.

Whilst the figures for the revival show were a bit disppointing, I have to hand it to the team behind it, they did a great and very respectful job of honouring what the show was all about while still making it seem fresh. Even the titles would convince an 'outsider'.
The two presenters really 'got it' and the icing on the cake was Phil Gayle being back.
I fully accept that in the real world it probably isn't commercially viable to bring it back - but I'd love it if they did all the same. I'd be there every morning.

As much as they were never going to live up to the original blocks era, or indeed the squares and stripes that followed, there is quite a bit to like about the presentation in the circle era all summed up in that clip there.
As for Johnny - it was clear from day 1 of his guest stint that they had to make him the permanent choice. It would be interesting to know how it all came about considering we know he also auditioned in the Gaby era. Was he bought in purely as a C4 face to guest stint, with it going so well they had to offer him the job, or was it effectively an on screen trial, which of course a couple of decades on we basically saw with Piers on GMB and Dan on Breakfast - two seemingly quite random stand ins who weeks later were on the show permaenntly.
