Interesting that the same doesn’t seem to apply to their other brand licensed channels, with Sky Sports F1 currently showing Indycar with its normal DOG, F1 logo and all, and last year we got college football not just with the NFL DOG but the NFL titles/bumper to boot!

For one thing Re: The UEFA Champions League Final. I am very glad to have it back with a clear picture on RTÉ2 in HD in Ireland from next season. VM Two's picture on Saorview was abysmal when the final was shown last night. The replay screen wipes on VM Two SD looked bloody awful. It was actually pathetically comical the way in how their coverage final was presented when compared of the all the other matches they had from this season just gone. Virgin would upgrade the source material to VM Two HD for all platforms but they have it in SD on Saorview except for the final which was broadcast in SD the whole way through. At least RTÉ2 will have a guaranteed HD picture to be used for every match including the final & for their highlights shows while they have an enhanced package given to them by UEFA from next year.

Euro u21 game between Italy and Portugal has the Premier League branding in the DOG. At least for the anthems anyway.

Not sure how I feel about this.... imo, I think she was being selfish to refuse to do media stuff at all. Any sportsperson realises that being in any sport has certain obligations automatically placed upon you, and everyone who plays sport at the professional level has to do media briefings with the press. Not everyone around the world has the ability to watch TV or listen to a radio and so the media briefings are the only way to report on sports stories in those places via newspapers.
I am not in any way trying to trivialise mental health concerns, but if she had reservations about it, she should have withdrawn from the outset so that others could get a chance at glory. As it stands, the player she beat in the first round has been denied the possibility of playing in the second round of a Grand Slam, which is not very fair to up and coming talent in the sport.
For those who don't remember, Anthony Hamilton -- in snooker -- got blasted by a lot of people for qualifying for the 2020 World Snooker Championship and then withdrawing before the main event because of "coronavirus concerns due to a crowd being present". Players knew beforehand that crowds would be present, so he should have withdrawn before doing qualifiers at all so that other players had an opportunity to qualify for the tournament. I think the same logic should apply to Osaka as well: should've withdrawn before the tournament started and then others get an opportunity they might get once in their life.

In absolute terms (contracts apart) no one in the world is legally obliged to talk to the media

Yeah you're wrong. She's there to play tennis, and f all else. If the media, who are largely superfluous nowadays in the age of Twitter and Instagram. want quotes to fill their pathetic websites and papers, they can just rip them direct from the player's SM profiles, as they usually do.

All other players are able to do so and its part of the job of being a sportsperson, all sports are exactly the same. If players were "only there to play tennis and nothing else", all other players -- including those on the mens circuit -- would never do media duties either and that would just set a trend for other sports to follow suit, which isn't going to happen because players have obligations as sportsmen. We've seen people in other sports do similar (ignore their media commitments) and get fined because its in breach of their contract terms by being a professional player.

The Women's Tennis Association wouldn't threaten a player with expulsion from a tournament if it wasn't in the players' contract to do media duties. Ultimately, its up to players to encourage the association to change the rules / contracts around media obligations and until that time comes, all players should do their media commitments after matches. Every player is able to do it, Osaka is no different.

Sadly giving an honest answer to stupid questions often gets sports people in trouble. Two sides to this argument though - completely get where Naomi is coming from but when you're getting paid potentially hundreds of thousands for two weeks work there are some things you suck up. Most of us end up in meetings we don't want to be, especially when things haven't gone well.

For an individual sport such as tennis that does need cooperation from all of the players, unlike team sports, where not all players need to talk.
On the other hand, there should be at least certain medical exemptions from some of the obligations.
