RE: The Sport Thread - Brekkie - 09-05-2022

Were reports C4 want to renew it. Suspect both VMTV and C4 want to avoid a situation like next week too. I wish they'd throw in a Challenge Cup fixture per round too, especially the group stages which BT only show one or two games per round anyway.

RE: The Sport Thread - bkman1990 - 10-05-2022

I've seen a thread on DS posting unverified rumours about Channel 4 winning rights to some La Liga matches in the UK. Are those rumours true or not? I just want to check with you guys here first if that was correct because I would think it would be completely false. TIA.

RE: The Sport Thread - Rdd - 10-05-2022

They don’t appear to be, the mods on DS have closed that thread. The rights are up though, and LaLiga issued the tender back in January. As you might recall they had awful trouble getting someone to meet their reserve the last time round (they overvalued their own product) and ITV4 ended up showing a few games at the start of the 2019-20 season before the deal was finally done with Premier Sports. This came after their disastrous dalliance with Eleven Sports which lasted a season.

Even if Channel 4 did win the rights I doubt they’d commit to 10 games per round, it would probably be more like one or two. I suspect a pay TV partner would be a possibility then. Please not Viaplay though, if that happens the likelihood will be that there will be no ROI coverage.

RE: The Sport Thread - Brekkie - 10-05-2022

Confirmation too of the changes to the Champions League. Pretty much as previously announced but 2 of the additional 4 slots will be based on performance in the previous years European Comps rather than historic pedigree as previously proposed, and 8 group matches rather than 10 in the new group stage, though still to be played over 10 matchdays. All in one league with 4 home and 4 away fixtures - do think 4 groups of 9 would have been better. 8 matches over 10 weeks would also have been the outcome if they'd gone for 8 groups of 5.

RE: The Sport Thread - Rdd - 10-05-2022

There’s a two legged play off to enter the last 16 for the teams finishing 9 to 24, effectively an extra knockout round I guess.

Surely there’s no real room for the EFL Cup for teams playing in Europe once this comes in? There’ll be effectively six extra midweeks needed for the Champions League. I know most European countries don’t have an equivalent completion any more.

RE: The Sport Thread - Brekkie - 10-05-2022

Guess that extra knockout round then takes the first two weeks of what was the four week round of 16 stage. Of course prior to that there was a six week second group stage. If they didn't have that and played the 8 matchdays over 8 weeks rather than 10 they wouldn't actually need any extra weeks.

The EFL have said this week the League Cup will continue but conceded the two-legged semi final would likely have to go and there would be a question mark over teams competing in Europe competing. Indeed suspect they'd quite like Liverpool to do the quadruple to put it's place in football in the spotlight.

P.S. Has the plan to have the semi finals in the week of the final and in the host city been confirmed too, or have they realised clubs would lose significant nights if they lost out on hosting semi finals?

RE: The Sport Thread - Brekkie - 10-05-2022

Tom Brady has signed a $375m 10 year broadcasting deal with FOX to begin once he retires (again) from NFL, earning him more than he earned through playing.

https://deadline.com/2022/05/tom-brady-joining-fox-sports-nfl-analyst-1235020198/

RE: The Sport Thread - Rdd - 10-05-2022

It puts Fox in the odd position of still having to replace Troy Aikman knowing that at some point in the future that replacement (who will do a Super Bowl!) will be replaced by Tom Brady. Woe betide if the replacement is excellent and Brady turns out not to be as good a commentator as he is a player. That would be succession planning worthy of NBC.

The latest official rumour was that La Liga had sided with the obscurity of the boxing platform Fite of all places. Makes Eleven Sports aquiring them sound like a normal business decision.

In other foottball rights news, UEFA have agreed a deal for the French rights (I think only of France matches) for the upcoming Nations League. With three weeks to go, no announcement yet on non-England matches in the UK and Ireland.

Rugby Union

Similar to its football equivalent, changes in format to the Heinken Champions Cup was announced today. Next season, the competition will take place over eight weekends instead of the nine that it has this season, meaning that widely praised two legged Round of 16 is no more. The one legged Ro16 and quarter-finals will take place in consecutive weeks with a few weeks gap then to the semi-finals and then to the final at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The format for the group stage will be announced ahead of the final, with the South African URC sides expected to join.

https://www.rte.ie/sport/rugby/2022/0510/1297152-epcr-to-scrap-two-legged-last-16-champions-cup-games/

Personally, I was a bit apprehensive about the two-legged knockout ties, but they were an absolute success in the end and it's a shame to see them be scrapped. The two groups of 12 format for the pool stage (which is likely what next season's system will be based on) was a bit odd and hard to work out IMO so I would rather a return to the more straightforward groups of 4 of old; but like the UCL that looks to have gone for good.

And there is also reports of a new format/competition for international rugby matches which is based on the failed Nations Championship of a few yaers ago.

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2022/may/09/rugby-powers-talks-new-global-north-v-south-tournament

And France tv has agreed a deal to continue to show the entirety of the Six Nations and Women's Six Nations and France's Autumn Internationals until 2025 inclusive. It means both tournaments will remain fully FTA in five of the six competing nations.

Rugby League

Two major developments in one here. Firstly, the RFL and Super League are to become one once again. And they have announced a 12 year 'strategic partnership' with IMG to 'transform rugby league'. High up on the agenda will be reforming the Super League, with relegation being dropped again a possible outcome.

Football again

UEFA also confirmed today that the 2023 UEFA Europa Conference League final will be in Prague, with Istanbul (UCL) and Budapest (UEL) already confirmed to also host finals next year.

And finally, the schedule of Euro 2024 has been published. The final will be in Berlin, the opening match in Munich, the semi-finals in Munich and Dortmund. The daily schedule looks identical to Euro 2020, with the final group matches taking place over four days (Sunday & Monday x1 group, Tuesday & Wednesday x2 groups), the Ro16 over four days (Saturday-Tuesday) and quarter-finals over two days (Friday & Saturday). The most significant takeaway is the exact kick-offs of each match will not be announced until after the final draw (like Qatar 2022). Would be nice to have a big match like England v. Wales at 14:00 on a Thursday again, which this should avoid.

Thinks that covers a lot of the developmennts of what seemed a very busy day.

That probably means all the first seeds avoid 2pm on weekday matches.

RE: The Sport Thread - RR - 11-05-2022

Re LaLiga - the same source has reported that the talks with Fite have stalled, and the league is looking at a direct subscription deal:

https://media.sportbusiness.com/2022/05/laliga-preparing-uk-d2c-solution-as-talks-with-fite-stall/

This may just be negotiation.

RE: The Sport Thread - Rdd - 11-05-2022

Neither sounds appetising, I’m afraid. I’m all for competition, but another subscription at this point doesn’t sound appealing. At least for LaLiga they have a fully programmed 24/7 English language service in the form of LaLigaTV available for whoever takes the rights or even if it is a D2C offering. (What happened to their signing of Gary Lineker btw? He seemed to appear for one El Classico and then was never seen again).

Meanwhile, the Heineken Cup. I think in Ireland at least, most people would like nothing more than the old 6 groups of 4 (pre 2014) or even the 5 groups of 4 (2014-2020) format to return. Personally I though the latter was the optimal format. As with the Round of 16 I thought things went very lucky for EPCR. It could just as easily have been a load of blowouts in the first legs followed by weakened sides being trashed in the second legs. The difficulty for those seeking a reduction of games (LNR and PRL, I’m looking at you) is that the two legged round of 16 didn’t so that. It still took 9 games to win the trophy. Hence this reduction. I fully take that the French league involves a 26 game regular season plus three rounds of playoffs and 38 games is way too much for a professional rugby club to be playing, but there are other ways to address that than to destroy the Heineken Cup which had to my mind the best group stage in sport. Now the group stage is basically a write off as you can qualify for the last sixteen with two or even just one win depending on other results.

RE: The Sport Thread - Brekkie - 11-05-2022

It's baffling really how La Liga struggles so much to sell it's rights. Guessing they overprice them.

As for Euro 2024 - a shame the Euros have switched the QFs to Fri/Sat when previously they ran Thu-Sun all in primetime, even in the 24 team format in 2016. I assumed the change in 2020 was to factor in additional travelling.
