A little late here, but I find it astonishing that people can write things like (from the Cleanfeed article):

with a straight face. Is Reith less "classy" than GIll Sans? Is it the exact percentage of the blocks that the letters filled that give the old logo gravitas, or is it how close together the blocks are?
Complete bobbins. They'd write exactly the same pretentious nonsense if the logos had switched places in history: "Gill Sans lacks the fruity aroma and intense miasma of ennui that's been evoked by Reith for the last 20 years..."
Anyway, as for the new logo itself, it doesn't half seem like change for change's sake - as if someone pushed for a rebrand but then couldn't bear to lose face and admit they couldn't come up with anything better (the logo is timeless, but that's nothing to do with the particular font or the spacing of the blocks). I'm sure most viewers won't notice, and half of those who do won't even be able to put their finger on what's "off".
I think the Reith "C" is a much nicer shape, but the increased gap between the boxes makes it look like it's leaving room for something.

I find Reith to be a very generic looking font. It has honestly always reminded me of Calibri, the default Microsoft font. It doesn't match the timelessness of Gill Sans and I think it's a pretty forgettable typeface for an organisation like the BBC, but oh well.

Yeah, it is weird when people ascribe certain values to certain fonts, for instance saying that one font had a nicer shaped C than another. Honestly, the typographic nihilism that has infected certain parts of the forum is really tedious.
Also, for future reference, best not to criticise other people's word choices and then immediately follow it up with twee vulgarities such as 'complete bobbins'.

Preferring one C to another because it's no longer disproportionately wide compared to the Bs isn't the same thing as labelling fonts with ill-defined buzzwords - not that the article did that, though. It used those flowery terms for the logo in general, not specifically for the fonts.

Also not the same thing. It's not the specific words they used, it's the fact that they don't really convey any objective meaning. If someone was comparing Comic Sans and Times New Roman and said that one had more "gravitas" than the other, I'd still find it pretentious, but at least I'd have a fairly good idea which one they were talking about. You can't really say the same thing about Gill and Reith.
My use of a colloquial term for "nonsense", twee though it may be, was at least concise and unambiguous.

I never said it was anything more than my opinion; the point is that it refers to an objective property of the letter C, and that I've been able to explain it coherently and that others can comprehend what i mean by it, which is not the case when the article says that the new logo doesn't have enough gravitas.
If the old logo evokes more class and gravitas than the new one it's only because it's been associated with the BBC for the last quarter of a century, whereas the new one hasn't (yet). That's circular, though not necessarily faulty, reasoning which boils down to "I don't like it because it's different"; it's not down to any intrinsic design flaw in the new logo.

This likely belongs in The Gallery, but I don't have access. I do feel that this new 'BBC Blocks' logo looks a bit 'off'. I think the issue is that
1. You want a new logo to be a new logo. This is just the old logo, with some changes to text size and spacing of blocks.
2. The text in the boxes is small, leaving a lot of negative space.
I have actually made my own version of how I'd have reithdesigned the BBC logo. Using the 1997 version, I made a minor redesign, with just the new font, and my own modern 'reithdesign'.

EDIT: Microsoft have rounded the corners of the panes in Windows 11, but you'd struggle to notice it.

Perhaps the issue with the logo looking awful on channel logos etc. due to the small size and negative space might actually be offset by the fact that for all we know, the new logos might go back to their 1997 style, so large BBC blocks with the 'ONE' or '1' beside it making it looks a lot bigger on screen.
Still doesn't change that fact that it looks like a knock-off but if 'major changes' are coming then who's to say how they are going to make it look on screen?
