I thought the ITV News special this morning was brilliant. Measured and explanatory, Mary did a fantastic job - It's nice to see her in that rolling news format, interviewing James Heappey for instance.
ITV really do come into their own on stories like this and it's actually very reassuring that ITV bosses signed off on this special and the hourly updates during This Morning earlier in the week.

ITV have a very strong top team at the moment - other than Tom and Rageh most have at least couple of decades presenting experience under their belt, whilst Tom and Rageh more than match that with reporting experience. Indeed if they were to send a presenter out Rageh is probably the obvious choice but they've got such strength in their correspondents I think it works best anchoring it all from the studio, and the timing of Robert Moore being over to be the studio correspondent is really working well for them.
As other channels are discovering anchoring from a warzone is never straight forward and I suspect as the story continues some focus may shift to the refugee crisis with some personnel moved to report from across the border.

You might ask yourself why Tom is never the ‘go to’ when open ended coverage is required. Sure he’s ok at Elections but not a dot on Mary, Nina and Julie for any kind of breaking news. As for Rageh …….. I’m not sure I’d want to experience him going open ended.

Kasha Madera did an impressive interview about half an hour ago from her position at the Polish/Ukraine border, where she was interviewing someone in Polish and then translating his answers to English at the same time

Give me Yalda, Kasia over usually NC drab anyway. Lukwesa Burak and Shaun Ley to name a few. Thank heavens the BBC realise we need anchors that know what they’re dealing with at times like these.
Both Yalda and Kasia are pros at rolling coverage and especially conflict. Not switched to CNN all day.

Given how rare open ended coverage is, how can you possibly make that sort of judgement?
Any of ITV News’ on air team could be required to anchor open ended coverage at short notice - the weekend cover presenters, for example, would most likely have to start the coverage until a more senior presenter arrived.
If those responsible for the on air team thought any of the presenters did not have the ability to present open ended if the need arose, I highly doubt they would put them on air at all, especially given how ITV News is setup.
If a major story breaks on a Saturday evening, for example, whoever was down for that bulletin would be presenting until a senior presenter arrives, which would potentially take some time depending on the circumstances.
