Apart from the what looks like an early example of Central's endcap being replaced on archive programming, much is made of the fact that at the time the show was "TV's biggest cash prize" of £6400.
When did this start becoming a "thing" or major selling point for a show? We all know prior to 1993 the prize limits on gameshows in the UK were capped, a legacy of the Twenty One scandal in the US in the 1950s and you had to seek permission from the regulator to go over this limit.
Of course these days daytime TV can (and does) give away quite a considerable sum of money so there is little need to brag about it as its sort of the norm, but it would have been a big thing 30/40/50 years ago.

Just confirming what we knew 18 months or so ago really. It's a shame the revival didn't fire and it was always the risk of bringing back such a beloved format. Whilst it wasn't without it's faults I don't think they screwed it up - personally I loved Richard Ayode but many just don't get his act, whilst it was really devalued when it became just another vehicle for celebs who are on TV too much to be on TV some more. 45 episodes isn't that bad a run though - suspect they'd have taken that when the revival was first mooted.

No surprise. I think it probably lasted a series longer than expected really.
It was all a bit under ambitious really and there was no real attempt to take the production into the 21st century, when you compare it for Fort Boyard where the games and the production seem like a Hollywood in comparison. I think that’s the route they should have gone down. That said I still don’t think it would have lasted that much longer.
Not sure where this leaves the US production, I believe a second season was commissioned but due to the pandemic hadn’t been made yet. But reports from The Crystal Maze blog suggest the set has already been scrapped. So presumably there won’t be anymore of that version or they’re be building a set stateside.

Didn't it semi-permanently occupy two or three stages at the Bottle Yard Studios, which was never going to be sustainable with the current demand for studio space. It is surprising though they didn't push it further internationally - perhaps there are restrictions on how much they can with it technically being a spin-off of Fort Boyard, which still airs in a few countries.

I believe they weren’t allowed to sell it internationally (or at least in Europe) in the original days.

It's a shame as I really enjoyed the revival, but as has been rumoured for a while, Channel 4 lost love for it towards the end. They shunted it around the schedule (is it really a 10pm show?) & they even first-ran a few civilian episodes on E4 mid-afternoon on a Sunday.
I hope they can find another show which will work for Richard though, with this & travel man ending... would be a shame to not have him on the telly!
