I get the rationale behind showing the Big Game on BBC One but, as a foreigner looking at this from abroad, this seems a bit ridiculous. Would the Beeb showing the entire Super Bowl on BBC Two really be a problem?

I am pretty sure the BBC have never signed a sporting contract that requires coverage to be on BBC1. Would seem a bit pointless given how far down the EPG the sports channels are.

Does the Superbowl usually kick-off on time or is it common for it to kick-off a few minutes later? That's what I don't get - I'm sure MOTD could be 55 minutes instead of 65 minutes so they switch channels before the game, or 5-10 minutes be trimmed off the news. Keeping it on BBC2 would have made much more sense though, but it's rare the BBC decisions over sport switching between BBC1/2 actually make sense.

The schedules have changed since then, the BBC1 coverage now begins at 11.30.

I think the reasoning why the Super Bowl is switching to One is because of the fact the sports at the Winter Olympics are deemed to be more 'minor' (thanks to NBC lobbying).
So if the Winter Olympic coverage has more chat and replays (because it's also got to be spread on the Red Button), then it makes sense for the Super Bowl to be on One because there's more live coverage?

The IOC's basically in bed with NBC with them paying the most for rights & being in the United States. They don't care if they're in a foreign country & they don't make the events the host nation cares about not convenient nor viewer friendly. At least for the next 2 Olympics, the hosts won't have so much to worry about that being in Europe & NBC utilizing its primetime to show the best bits.

Would seem a bit pointless given how far down the EPG the sports channels are.For a lot of sports contracts the BBC want to put it on their flagship channel, and the extra reach it gets (yes I know everyone can get BBC 2 as well) is one of their arguments to rights holders for FTA coverage. In effect making sure their event sponsors get to be seen by the most number of people, along with giving prominence to their sport / event and so on.
The BBC’s 2009-2012 F1 contract - reportedly - did require coverage to be on BBC 1 unless approval was given. It was said at the time that when the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix had a lengthy stoppage due to torrential rain, they had to ask Bernie Ecclestone / FOM for the OK to move the rest of the race to BBC 2. (There was a two part drama due to go out on BBC 1 at 9pm that Sunday night and the following day.)
The Match of the Day contract (as it were) is full of restrictions, including the time it can be broadcast. I wouldn’t be surprised if that includes a clause that it must be on BBC 1. Presumably there is an allowance for planned (like Last Night of the Proms or the Festival of Remembrance) or unplanned events that might cause it’s time (or channel) to change.

Match of the Day 2 used to be on BBC Two on a Sunday, but that is now on BBC One.
Re the requirement to be on BBC One - and I have no idea of the contractual basis - but don't forget that events like this are on the BBC free to air both because it increases the audience for the sport, and also because the BBC pushes events it has in other programmes that are popular. I have no doubt that the Superbowl coming up in two days time would not be one of the main news headlines and main reports on BBC One's 10 O'Clock news last night if they weren't rights holders. Cricket chose recently to go with the BBC over Five for that reason, despite the latter offering more money.

That looks horrific if true, but I’ll reserve judgement till it’s up on screen. NBC could do with thinking about getting rid of at least one of the at least three different graphics packages they use, mind you. They have one package for NFL (debuted at Super Bowl LII) one for golf (which technically belongs to Golf Channel I guess), and one for basically everything else (debuted I think in 2015 - though they didn’t bother to wait for the Super Bowl and debuted it at the Wild Card round instead - and now very long in the tooth as far as US sports graphics is concerned).
Closer to home, and noticed RTE employed a play clock for conversions in last nights URC game. This is typically seen on French rugby coverage but rarely elsewhere.
