Higher than Queen Mother Funeral which had a peak audience of 10.4m (that was on a Tuesday). Diana Funeral was watched by 31m; 19.3 on BBC, 11.7m ITV.

I think what is noteable yesterday is the gap between the BBC and the rest. ITV had been narrowing it a bit lately but I think having Huw rather than Dimbleby lead such events makes them much more accessible.

I must say I prefer Dimbelby for these occasions still. I find Huw's questioning of guests a little excessively mannered but I know it's personal taste.

Re. The question about window or TV screen, I too am also surprised when people assume a real backdrop is more complex than a screen, however as someone who works in the industry I am still often perplexed as to the insistence on always having studio teams on site rather than back in the studio. Especially in the current Covid world with all the logistical challenges described.
I know them 'being there' adds a certain something but I'm not sure we'd lose a great deal if they weren't.
It's very different to grab someone for a quick interview on site compared to doing it elsewhere, or down the line.

I wonder if it's a weekday/weekend thing too ?
ITV, as you say have narrowed the gap on the BBC in recent years on 'one off major events', but perhaps during the week (where they have had recent success) they've benefited from their larger regular daytime audience ?
Different viewing dynamics at the weekend ?

To be fair to msnbc Today did steal their desk for coverage. The desk in 1A has normally is in 3A.
I don’t know why msnbc didn’t use the normal news desk that Lester Holt sits at.

I think it was a good decision.
Death, Build-up and Funeral are three pretty distinct things. Having them flow into one another would be confusing and would mean that pointless speculation and insulting remarks about who got what wrong don't really need to continue for days on end.

Rude Newsroom - rude. In your own words give [mention]Rob[/mention] a break - how he has structured the threads has been very sensible and is not unlike how Asa handled major events. Conversation has flowed naturally from one to the other too, and sometimes the conversation does need to be forcibly moved on. The original thread ended in a cycle of people basically repeating the same thing. Three threads on the topic isn't excessive at all, and the funeral was a very different event to the breaking news.
Also, and I'm guilty of it with this post, we shouldn't get bogged down with posts about what we should post, especially in the thread itself. Rob has provided a feedback thread for such things. Indeed your post has done has probably ensured this thread gets locked too - although to be honest that would probably be appropriate now anyway. I do agree with UTV Lifer a new thread to reflect on the coverage as a whole and what broadcasters should have learned from it for similar situations moving forward may now be appropriate.
