ITV News Changes from March - finty6 - 04-03-2022

It's been confirmed that viewers in Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland will see only half an hour of the ITV Evening News on Fridays when the new schedule launches next week.

The 7pm slot will be for local programming:

Not too much of an issue in normal times when that half hour can have a stronger England focus - in reality much of the additional reporting from the UK will be England dominated anyway. However a bit trickier to opt out in current circumstances given one story dominates the bulletin, so it'll be interesting to see whether they conciously focus the extra half hour on UK stories next week or continue to have the buildings almost exclusively about the invasion.

There won't be an opt out in most of Scotland on STV, at least not initially, unless they decide to move the Tonight programme to Fridays instead of Thursdays after News at Ten.

I don't suppose we got any ratings info for last weekends breakfast coverage. It got a plug at the end of todays evening news.

Also glad to see Vera cancelled tonight and replaced with It'll be Alright on the Night so that News at Ten isn't pushed back to 10.50pm. Grantchester will keep it in the 10pm slot for the next six weeks so hope with the new schedule after then it they don't regularly push it back to 10.50pm to keep the 2 hour drama repeat slot.

The strap accompanying the plug read
‘ITV News Weekend Morning’.

I’m sure it won’t be introduced as that, but if it is… it won’t make sense unless Yoda is doing the voiceover.

I guess the timing of this change is such that people will think it's a temporary thing due to the current War in Ukraine.

Has there been any promotion? It seems very low key, was anything said on ITV News itself?

Wasn't even mentioned at the end of the Evening News last night. I thought it might've been mentioned then.

The timing hasn’t changed. Just like when Tom Bradby relaunched News at Ten, best not to shout about it and attract negative headlines if it’s a flop. Daybreak anyone?

No doubt the content will be different to what was intended and I suspect many viewers will just assume it is extended due to additional coverage of the war. As Chris says seems they'll let it bed in a bit before promoting it and making any major changes. I imagine if there was any significant changes across the ITV News look at least one region would have hinted at them last night.

I've seen a few ECPs advertising the new time for Emmerdale but that's about it.

This is good news for the nations. ITV Wales usually have quite a few opt outs between the 2 Corrie episodes on a Monday and/or Wednesday and between the 2 Emmerdale's on Thursday. They would have struggled to meet the requirements of local programmes without this opt out. Also quite a few evenings after the late news are used to opt out. Certainly on a Monday evening for a weekly political programme in Wales whilst the English regions get a politics show once a month.

Mary Nightingale was on This Morning this morning discussing the changes to ITV Evening News.

Some things that stuck out for me in that interview is pressing home that ITV News is impartial and seeing a lead anchor on This Morning promoting the new 6.30 bulletin on one of ITV's most watched daytime shows.

How far ITV News has come from being a tick box bulletin to being at the core of ITV's output.

ITV News Changes from March - Brekkie - 07-03-2022

I think it's unfair to say it's ever been a "tick box bulletin".
