After months of delays and behind the scenes mess, Nexstar's WJZY is finally changing brands. With the channel brand being already confirmed as Fox Charlotte (dropping Fox 46), the news department is being renamed Queen City News, and switch to a blue and yellow color palette, dropping in the process the Fox O&O package for one of the Nexstar corporate packages conceived by Rey RodrÃguez/Linear Drift. The new Fox Charlotte will also adopt the "Carolina's Own" slogan, in the style pioneered by WGN and later adopted by WPIX and KTLA, among the other former Tribune stations who use that style. The rebrand debuts in January, which will finally see the debut of the rest of their new set, designed by FX Design Group in collaboration with Nexstar's in-house teams.

WDKY-TV Lexington Kentucky . On 1 January, the station launched it's own in-house newscast, after having an outsourced newscast from other Lexington Kentucky station WKYT, who produced news for the station since 1995. The station also expanded the morning news 5-9am (starting today) and a new 6:30pm (starting today) against network newscasts.
This station was once owned by the current founder of Nexstar, Perry Sook, when he owned a company called Superior, the station was sold to Sinclair in 1996. When Sinclair tried to buy the Tribune company and got in trouble for trying get the deal after even a merger friendly FCC chairman didn't like how the deal wasn't following the rules (long story) that deal broke, Tribune sued Sinclair and they settled out of court, by that time Nexstar had ended up with Tribune, part of the settlement, Sinclair included this station (and the assets of another) so it ended up under Nexstar. (Hope the history lesson wasn't too much)
Here's the first 10 pm news cast, it uses Nexstar's graphics that are mostly used on Fox affiliates but swaps out red for green, It makes me like them actually. The anchors are a hold over from the WKYT days as they were employed by Nexstar already,

They even managed to do severe weather coverage during the dramatic New Year's Day outbreak, breaking away from Fox network programming. It really says a lot about Nexstar's investments on expanding local news on underserved stations using an unexpensive budget that favors new tech and editorial processes. Better they continue to do this than expensively relaunching WGN America into the clearly mistargeted NewsNation (selling itself as a no-bias, straight news network, but in reality a right-wing punditry and true crime network, although less aggressive than Fox and/or Newsmax).

The music they use is a SAM package called Canvas, originally composed for the Media General stations. The cut they (over)use is an update that Nexstar commissioned for WBTW in Myrtle Beach/Florence when they went Linear Drift.

WJZY-Charlotte. Monday saw the debut of Fox 46's new Queen City News brand. They have dropped the Fox O&O look for a recolored version of the Linear Drift standardized package for Nexstar's Fox affiliates (the colors used are really an eyesore). To make things worse, they even dropped Beyond (the SAM package used by Fox O&Os and many affiliates) in favor of tacky production music. It also looks like they decided not to change the station brand to Fox Charlotte, they are still using the Fox 46 brand used as an O&O. Finally, we are now able to see more of the set FX Design Group designed and built for them.

I like the WDKY and WJZY modifications the Nexstar FOX graphics, which I normally don't like, for some reason , removing the red makes them more appealing to me. The new intro reminds me of WPVI in Philadelphia, might be because their current News Director came from KYW in Philly. The branding is a little much, but I don't hate it.

Can anyone explain to me how the western edition broadcasts work for the morning and evening network news programs? Is it just another recording of the anchor saying "This is a western edition", or is it actually different? Do they always do Western Editions, or just when there is an update to a story?

Yep. Only when a story needs to be updated and it develops during the eastern edition, network newscasts do a western edition, which is mostly only the A block, which contains further information about the story. Otherwise, network newscasts only air a single edition live on the Eastern Time Zone (and often for the Central), and it is broadcast on tape delay for the Mountain and Pacific Time Zones. Some broadcasts might feature altered content, like what happened during an edition of the NBC Nightly News late last year.

In other news, WRCB 3, Chattanooga, TN's NBC affiliate, has been renamed Local 3, dropping in the process their Circle 3 logo and the Eyewitness News brand it had since the 90s. The rebrand has a logo and graphics package that imitates the style of the Morgan Murphy Media stations, but much better done. It looks like it is a Hothaus work. They also dropped SAM's 360 in favor of Inergy. Casually, this is one of the few stations in the US still owned by non-corporate interests, the Sarkes Tarzian company (owned by the descendants of the Turkish-American manufacturing mogul, with a non-controlling minority stake owned by Gray).
