Sky Sports' coverage of last Sunday's F1 reached a peak of 2.66 million viewers - the highest ever figure for a race on Sky and only the second time ever a viewing figure above 2 million was recorded for Sky Sports F1 coverage. More statistics of the high viewing figures and analysis of potential coverage in this good piece from Motorsport Broadcasting here - https://motorsportbroadcasting.com/2021/12/07/f1-audiences-surge-in-uk-and-netherlands-as-championship-race-heats-up-in-jeddah/

Still no announcment on any FTA coverage for this weekend unsurprisingly, but the race will be live on Sky Sports Main Event again, in addition to the F1 channel. Motorsport Broadcasting also reports that this weekend is potentially the last race on BBC radio with their contract concluding at the end of the season; with 5 Live broadcasting both Sunday Premier League kick-offs, the F1 has often been shunted down to Sports Extra, or often (especially during the cricket season) to online only, so will be interesting to see if retaining that contract will be of interest anymore.

Elsewhere, Atalanta v. Villareal in the Champions League has been postponned for some reason...
If it does take place tomorrow there will be four different UEFA competition played tomorrow as the Women's Champions League is played this week alongside the usual Conference League and Europa League.

Any previous Champions League matches ever played on Thursdays?

Actually just as you wrote that it's broke that C4 will indeed show the race live.

Quote:It is believed that Channel 4 is due to feature a short build-up programme, and brief post-race analysis, likely half an hour in length, while for the race it will take the feed – including commentary – from Sky Sports.

Channel 4’s usual highlights programmes, which air several hours after qualifying and the race respectively, are set to remain in place as originally scheduled.
Will slot quite neatly into a 12.30-3.10 slot on C4 displacing The Simpsons and film Puss in Boots. Indeed makes you wonder if they scheduled the afternoon with the possibility in mind - although that said we often see with schedule changes networks have a habit of over compllicating things.

The Sport Thread - Jon - 08-12-2021

Odd that they’d take Sky’s commentary rather than their own. I would assume that’s at Sky’s wishes rather than 4s. Unless there some technical complication about getting the feed back live, at short notice. I can see a Sky Sports F1 DOG being on screen throughout, as that’s the precedent set by the Amazon deal.

The Sport Thread - Newshound47 - 08-12-2021

Spurs v Rennes has been called off due to high level of Covid cases within the Spurs camp. Their match against Brighton on Sunday is looking likely to be called off as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if Channel 4 were half expecting to show the race live; there were already suggestions last week and Channel 4 and Sky already have a working agreement for F1 so might have been hinting at building on that in the last few weeks as the finale got closer. Will be interesting to have part of the Sky coverage on Channel 4. Listenning to a good section of both's post-race analysis last weekend and I felt that the general opinion from the seperate coverage on who was to blame on the big incidents differed quite a bit (Sky pro-Hmailton v. C4 more pro-Verstappen), so will be intersting quite how noticeable any contrast in the two seperate broadcasts being side by side will feel.

I'd suspect that the Sky commentary was at behest of Sky - both the cricket and the tennis on C4 were direct simulcasts of Sky and Prime Video (even with no ads in the entire tennis coverage) so guess those deals formed the foundations of this deal.

The Sport Thread - Brekkie - 08-12-2021

Wonder if the delayed version will include the C4 commentary then.

Also whether the wrap around coverage will be from the C4 team or joining Sky. As you say the previous similar arrangements have acted as a promotion for the host broadcaster.

No mention of when it will be recheduled, but it looks like it will be rescheduled rather than forefited like we have seen in the Heineken Champions Cup rugby (more below). Training ground closed too so very likely Sunday will be off.

To the rugby and the four teams that were stranded in South Africa by the announcement of the Omicron variant and subsuquent travel restrictions.

Scarlets remain in quarantine in Belfast until Friday and subsuqently their match away to Bristol this weekend has been forefited, with Bristol officially winning 28-0. No word yet on the following weeks match v. Bordeaux but I won't hold my breath

Cardiff Rugby were in a slightly better position (despite being left in South Africa for longer) as they left their Wales internationals back in the UK. Subsuquently, with them, accademy players and some semi-pros (and Dan Fish returning from retirement twice in the month or so since he retired) will play Toulouse on Channel 4 and BT Sport and Saturday. Sure that will be a close, thrilling encounter for the FTA audience...?

Zebre and Munster's fixtures will also go ahead as planned. Munster like Cardiff have added a large group of accademy players to their squad.

All in all, for the second year in a row the Champions Cup group stage is a rather big mess.

The Sport Thread - Newshound47 - 08-12-2021

UEFA rules say the match must be played before the 31st December. The most likely is either next Thursday with Leciester v Spurs postponed or the 21st/22nd December with Spurs v West Ham in the EFL Cup postponed.

Cardiff also feature in the FTA game the following week against Harlequins. Ridiculous that with just four group games they manage to feature the same team two consecutive weeks running.

The Sport Thread - Rdd - 08-12-2021

Toulouse also feature twice in the FTA games, oddly enough, they are in the Round 3 game against Wasps. The final game and the only one featuring an Irish team is Bath v Leinster. It’s an odd deal, as I’ve said before, and I’m not sure how these picks (which are common to Channel 4 and VMTV) are determined.

Have to agree with both of the above with how weird the C4/VM picks are and how bad that Cardiff get to be shown twice in a row, even more so with both fixtures severly affected by the COVID quarantines. I would understand better if a big fish like Leinster or a well supported team like Leicester were shown often to maximise audiences but Cardiff were not likely to win it and I think a big English team would bring a bigger casual audience than Cardiff. Looking at the fixtures list and France tv's selection are a lot more varied, despite showing double the matches that Channel 4 and VMTV show, with two teams being shown twice (Bordeuax and Racing 92) across the seven ties announced so far. Oddly on there, the round 4 tie between Scarlets and Bristol is down to be shown on S4C, I'm not sure if that's accurate because I think that's the first time I've heard of that?
https://www.epcrugby.com/champions-cup/matches/fixtures-and-results/

In the Challenge Cup, BT Sport will show the matches filmed and shown by France 4 that involve English teams, and S4C will show all the Dragons matches as they are the only Welsh side in the competition. Interestingly, they are the only broadcaster down to show Perpingan v. Dragons this Saturday which suggests, though rather unlikely, that S4C will be the host broadcaster for a match in the south of France???

The Sport Thread - Brekkie - 09-12-2021

I know the Challenge Cup literally is the second rate competition but it certainly seems to have seen a downgrade in coverage in recent years. There would be no harm at all in throwing one game per round in the group stages at least in with the FTA deal for the Champions Cup.

The only suggestion I've seen around the Champions Cup picks is BT get first pick on a match to air exclusively and the ERC determine the Free to Air match - though suspect BT get more than one pick before that happens. It almost feels like the matches picked for a UK and Irish audience are more leaned towards the French teams. With 8 teams from the English Premiership and 6-8 teams from the URC it doesn't seem unreasonable for the FTA pick to be within the parameters that they try and show as many teams as possible, but only once. There can be the caveat too that it must include a French team at least once so it isn't all English v Celtic clashes.

The Sport Thread - Rdd - 09-12-2021

The European Challenge Cup really has suffered over the years, though they’ve undid some of the worse of the changes, restoring the Heineken Cup qualification for the winner and latterly the “drop down” after the group stage has been restored too. Like the Heineken Cup, the current format isn’t the easiest to understand and I’d prefer a return to the 6x4 format, though it appears that’s not going to happen anytime soon. With the Challenge Cup there was always the problem of massive home victories and teams not really taking it seriously, particularly away sides.

From a TV point of view losing the dedicated Thursday window was unfortunate, I get with BT Sport having exclusive rights and the inevitable clash with the Europa League it wasn’t really ideal for them but it just means there’s no exclusive window to showcase the competition and it will inevitably clash with the more senior tournament.

It gets a new brand identity this year, so new graphics, though the colour scheme looks garish. Hopefully they keep the orchestral theme music which has been in use since 2012.

The Times say it’ll be C4’s own pre and post race show.

It will be Sky coverage for most of it with some Channel 4 wrap around.

https://www.channel4.com/press/news/sky-and-channel-4-strike-deal-show-2021-formula-1-season-finale-live-terrestrial

Quote:Under the terms of the deal, Channel 4 will broadcast Sky’s production of the live race coverage with its presenting team of Nico Rosberg, Jenson Button, Martin Brundle, Nat Pinkham, David Croft, Karun Chandhok, Simon Lazenby and Ted Kravitz.

Channel 4’s team of Steve Jones, David Coulthard, Mark Webber and Lee McKenzie will provide build up to the race for 15 minutes from midday before handing over to Sky for their pre-race coverage and Sky’s live coverage of the race itself.

After the podium ceremony Channel 4’s presentation team will return to give its instant reaction to the race before a full Channel 4 highlights programme produced by Whisper airs at 5.30pm.

Also according to Motorsport Broadcasting, Qualifying and the Race will also be on Sky Showcase.
