That said I think just actually getting around to appointing a permanent co-host is far easier than reformatting tge show again.

Wasn’t that the idea of the show at launch? You’d have a team of presenters that hosted the show. I liked it, but clearly the bosses didn’t as it was changed to just focus on the two lead presenters after a few weeks.

From the bits I see the show seems somewhat lost at the moment, I don’t quite understand what it’s trying to be.

The classic GMTV-esque fluff is very much there, but you’ve then got these random, culture war inspired and totally inane daily debates, which I’m not convinced ITV Daytime’s core audience particularly want or enjoy.

The studio and presentation is really quite alien to anything we are used to at breakfast, although it is good to see the sofa slowly creeping back in.

I’m not really certain what the answer is format wise, but ITV certainly don’t seem to know, that’s for sure.

I would certainly agree that I found GMB's rather low-key approach to the Jubilee a bit jarring, considering how they've gone all out in the past for the Oscars, the Storms that we had earlier in the year and even the death of Captain Tom, though I think they did take the show outside for the last hour this morning, which is something.

I agree again that GMB does feel somewhat lost at the moment in terms of format. And we're not far off now from hitting 18 months since Piers' departure and there is still no permanent replacement for him and the carousel of guest hosts next to Susanna looks set to continue indefinitely - meanwhile, BBC Breakfast has lost both Dan Walker and Louise Minchin in the same time period, with Louise swiftly replaced by Sally, and Jon Kay looking to set to get Dan's old job. It would certainly help ground GMB in my opinion to give Susanna a permanent co-host

That said, the fact that ITV Breakfast haven't hit the big fluffy panic button and reverted the show to how it was like for most of 2015, does show a level of confidence in GMB and it's brand that they never had in Daybreak and GMB in its first few years

Yes very odd how low key the coverage has been. Go back a few years and you could imagine it would have been Piers and Susanna live from outside Buckingham Palace with bespoke titles and graphics and they would have gone all in.

As they seem to hold great importance on what people say on Twitter (the daily culture war debate is often based on something which people are outraged about on Twitter but has barely been reported elsewhere) maybe they’d assumed most weren’t interested so didn’t bother

Why? I don’t understand why this keeps being brought up in such a way that people are insistent it is damaging to the show. It really isn’t.

Yet Kay Burley and Niall Patterson (and others) manage running solo at different parts of the week on Sky Breakfast for 3 hours.  They have DTLs, correspondents presenting specific reports in the studio, interviewing guests in the studio and the ability to throw to Sky Sports News etc.

As a result it doesn't feel as though it's just down to one person all the time, even though you clearly identify the programme with the main Presenter.

If I remember correctly I think it lasted until around September of its first year - Susanna was originally the ‘main’ presenter and did the top story herself, followed by the rest of the team in turn. Susanna would often do items alone, as would Charlotte.

I always thought it worked rather well, having an additional presenter is useful for smaller items and one-on-one interviews with experts, etc.

They’ve essentially gone back to the classic ITV Breakfast format if you think about it - two main presenters sat in the same place for the entire show, with a newsreader to do a bulletin at the top of each hour. GMTV did it, all the versions of Daybreak did it.

I think even BBC Breakfast is probably the more interesting format at this point! At least they divide the interviews up between presenters, have the business bulletins, sport etc.

Quite honestly I’d go back to something closer to the original GMB format - Susanna is really excellent in the political interviews, for example, and the second presenter doesn’t really add anything during these. Then go with two presenters for the fluffier human interest stuff, use the newsreader for the smaller interviews with experts etc.

It’s not really benefiting the show either though is it? The ratings trundle along not far above Daybreak when it was finally dumped. With a rotation of random, temporary presenters, there’s no big selling point or chemistry to really promote the show with.

RE: Good Morning Britain - Brekkie - 04-06-2022

Neither Richard or Adil can really establish themselves in the role or take the kind of ownership of the show in a way a permanent host, plus the fact producers just won't appoint either of them to the main role suggests to viewers the show doesn't really think they're good enough - but just keeping the seat warm until something better cones along.

It feels like there is kind of a God complex around Piers at the show and they just can't move on from him.

RE: Good Morning Britain - boddington - 04-06-2022

Given Piers Morgan's show / TalkTV is flatlining, I wouldn't be surprised if he returns to Good Morning Britain in the next 6 months and this discussion will come full circle.

Yeah, that's not going to happen..

RE: Good Morning Britain - eyeTV - 04-06-2022

They obviously don't see the need to do much. Susanna tweeted that they had their best May share of audience (except for the pandemic) this year. And that's without Piers.

RE: Good Morning Britain - Brekkie - 04-06-2022

I think we see that attitude across TV now - settle for how you're doing rather than strive to try and do better.

Is Dan Walker guest presenting tomorrow then ?

Caught of couple of minutes this morning and can’t help but feel the sad music is too much, it sounds like a parody.

I also think the more sensitive stories should come from the sofa, the desk is very formal for those kinds of things IMO. Back in 2015 the only thing they didn’t from the sofa was the news I seem to recall, quite a move to go from that to being desk based all the time.

Richard Madeley is taking a long summer break and is back in the autumn, but they still haven’t offered him the gig full time apparently. I’d be a bit miffed I have to say, it’s like their still holding out to see who else they can find.

It does mean they’ll presumably need to find someone to replace Richard over summer, however.

I heard it this morning after the Grenfell anniversary piece, and thought exactly the same. Having a sad version of a theme is fine for a soap when a beloved character dies, but it just feels tacky and mawkish when linked to a terrible tragedy.

I don’t think the standard theme would have sounded out of place, but if they felt it was too much, just not playing a theme, and having the break sting play silently would have been more respectful.

It might be a signs of things to come, you never know. And regarding the summer, they always have less than impressive guest presenters anyway, though hopefully that will change when the summer holidays arrive next month.

Has the local news being pushed back?. Because Richard Arnold has love island updates and I would expect it would be extended
