I think that's the oddest thing about all this, Who thought putting out a tweet was the right way to break this news? If you listen to Overseas Stations that broke the news at the time, they're not certain it's true. Any properly trained journalist will question any big news story that breaks on Twitter, no matter the source, there have been too many hoaxes over the years.
It's certainly something for the Palace to consider next time around. The BBC for all its problems is still generally trusted, It should be the first to broadcast the news.
Plus is it not proper for the British Royal Family to notify its people on a British Service? Not an American one.

I noticed over the course of the day that a few presenters seemed to pause before reading that line as if to say am I reading this right or is it a typo?. We are so used to hearing Prince Philip or The Duke of Edinburgh

Looking back through my phone notifications, BBC News did an app notification that came through at 12:08, so I immediately turned on the TV and caught the start of the BBC One coverage.
Regarding the ‘will they learn any lessons’, bear in mind the next one will be The Queen herself, hopefully many years into the future. So an entirely different situation, a much bigger deal, something most people will have never seen in their lifetime, so not a time for lessons to be learnt. I would expect coverage to be ten times more extensive, and entirely justified.
Oh and yes, every time they said “The Prince Philip” it sounds a bit oddly written to me, like they’d misread it

They were first notified by a listener and verified it through NBC News. The presenter does continue to look for other sources, but it's very clear that he's unsure about it all.

Does the ITV News app send notification?
I’ve got it on my phone & can’t say I remember turning the notifications off when I originally downloaded it.

Please bbc can you now move on to other issues. The Prince Philip story has gone on for long enough now. Please stop putting the same thing across multiple TV channels and radio stations. On Friday I tried bbc1 bbc2 radio 1 1xtra 2 3 4 5 6 and Asian network and it was all the same thing and it's not much different now. The commercial channels are starting to move on the bbc should do too

I've written at least two radio Obituary procedures in my time, and the overriding thing is you have to be 100% certain the news is completely legit before running with it. Until you've got confirmation from Sky or Radio NewsHub, at most you drop production and ads and play some love songs.
Even on an official account, I personally would not be comfortable going to air based on a Twitter report. Twitter is, in places, a cesspit. No broadcaster worth their salt can really trust it.
Embargoes are still respected. In 2019 RNH sent a copy of the Queen's Speech to client stations at 2:30pm on Christmas Day, with a three line whip not to TX it before 3pm. Cue me dialled into the playout system, mid-lunch at my sister's house 100 miles away from the TSA. :lol:
Similar thing happened with Boris' speeches on March 23 and September 22 last year, which Sky released to client stations about 10 minutes before the embargoed TX time.

I believe, certainly up until just weeks ago when the Duke was in hospital, the agreed protocol was supposed to be that news organisations were to be given an hour's prior knowledge to get their ducks in a row. For whatever reason this didn't happen. I wonder if it was deemed that in the social media age an embargo of this kind would be very difficult to get everyone to stick to.

I have an image of someone at a computer in Buckingham Palace pressing the wrong button and sending someone out to post the notice to the gate. Obviously not though.

I think all PSBs will. Out of the legacy "main 5" channels as with Diana I suspect all except Channel 4 will carry the funeral, with C4 airing suitably-toned alternative programming.
With Diana, did BBC Two just simulcast One straight or was it signed? Our tellies were stuck on One all day - my Dad gave me the bollocking of my life for checking out what all the channels were doing.

It’s pretty much just a wrapper for the website to be fair so you’re not really missing out on much. I have always been surprised at how little effort ITV has put in to its online offerings when compared to other broadcasters with regards to news, for instance, currently there is no weather forecast page or app, just a video
