For the News Channel it's probably because they want to limit viewing to people who pay the licence fee.
It's probably got more to do with sports footage rights

I'm not sure it added much to the coverage as he was mostly interviewing people down the line. If he remains there, I imagine he'll be doing radio reporting only.
Nick's been in Kyiv for a few days now - and I agree about Simon Jack who was amazing how he picked it up.

Stateside, last night's reports interestingly delayed programming rather than pre-empting it, which might have something to do with the February sweeps period but I'm not sure. It seems like CBS and ABC delayed themselves 15 and 20 minutes respectively (and this continued until at the least around half past 1/just past 1, respectively, as both networks delayed their late night programming as well as to have a full local newscast). I didn't have access to NBC and the other networks end their schedules at 10:00 EST.

Their special Ukraine invasion report looks exactly like a special edition of Elysée 2022: broadcasting from the same studio, with the same presenters, same production team and a live studio and virtual audience; additionally, politicians and presidential candidates (including Le Pen herself) have been participating in studio and through videoconferencing, including former Foreign Affairs minister (and the mind behind France's opposition to the Iraq war) Dominique de Villepin and polemist and philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy.
TF1 is sticking to regular programming, but dropped C Canteloup for an extended 20h to allow an interview with Jean-Yves Le Drian, whilst M6 is shuffling today's Enquête exclusive for a special urgent edition on the war, plus a repeat of a 2018 edition on Putin himself.

Suspect the opening monologues will have a very different tone tonight.

Thought I might dip into a bit of RT coverage throughout the day to see how they were handling it.
It's not an invasion or occupation - they have been calling it the "Donbass Incident". They keep going on about Ukraine needing "de-Nazification" and that 14,000 people have been killed since 2014 in a genocide.
They are really pushing the Russian Gov's POV (as you'd expect) and I will be interested to see how OFCOM react to their coverage, if they do.

ITV seem to have opted not to send presenters out and leave it to reporters being linked to from the studio.
P.S. Question about Russia Today - do they take any UK advertising? Indeed do they take any advertising at all, or is it completely state funded?
