I do agree- I feel the 2018 series was the strongest by far, but I recall watching the original 2002 series and that was a really good lineup too. 2018 is my personal favourite though- all the shows had good runs that year- Strictly, I’m A Celeb, Bake Off had some real character, CBB had the punchgate drama etc

All that buildup last night with Naughty Boy and when the two camps did merge nothing happened and it wasn't even mentioned, Indeed if it wasn't for Richard Madeley talking us through each episode it would feel even flatter.

It does feel like they need to find their "Press here for emergency twist in case of low ratings" button.

Yeah, a pretty dull year. Madeley and Arlene were exciting signings on paper, but they're not getting to show their fiery side.

Richard Madeley is generally a decent chap - he showed that on The Circle. He's just a bit of a baffoon, which he is getting to showcase here. At the moment he's the likely winner by default.

Still early days though really - only really been three shows highlights the celebs actual character and the show is so tightly formatted even those don't leave much room for non-task action.

Only really interesting story so far has been about Ginola's heart attack whilst playing which I had no idea about. Indeed given that happened quite surprised he's been cleared to take part.

The Ant and Dec links feel a bit disjointed this year- possibly due to them commenting on footage from the previous day; which yes, they do in Australia, but it's not the previous day for us- it's the same day but due to the time zone difference, their presentation is presented as earlier. I'm not sure how to explain it- I think I explained that quite complicatedly.

Madeley was caught shoplifting in my local Tesco years back.

Its a shame because I don't actually think the castle format vs jungle format is to blame, the cast this year are just dull as heck.

Hope he is OK.

Seems trivial in comparison to someones health but seems everything is aligning for this series to be somewhat of a dud - just 5.5m viewers last night, nearly 4m down on the equivalent episode last year. That can't be explained away with just streaming competition and England not being in lockdown surely.

So in 4 days we've had about 2.5m drop. Is that normal?

Not quite as bad as that, was 5.8m including +1. Which is 3m down on last year, and 2.3m down on 2019.

Still pretty grim for the show of course. I would have expected some kind of decline this year, everything (even Strictly and Bake Off) have been down this year, but I was still expecting it to settle around 7m overnights. So it's now over a million below that. It might get back over 6m tonight (Shetland and the football were probably the toughest competition of the week) but I'm not banking on it. Do of course need to wait to see the consolidated figures, I'm a Celebrity normally adds an awful lot.

Do think it's largely a castle effect, whilst people appreciated the attempt last year I think general consensus was that it wasn't quite the same. ITV knew it of course, earlier in the year Carolyn McCall was quite firm on it being a show supposed to be in a jungle. It's almost like a spin-off rather than the normal show. But at the same time a better set of celebs and more interesting show could have mitigated that.

I do think a return to Australia next year (assuming they can!) will boost the numbers, although they'll need to make a splash with some of the names as well to really bounce back. A bit like how they clearly shelled out on bigger names in the Holly year. I expect the two issues might be linked, lots of celebs would probably rather do the jungle and are holding out.

They need to avoid hitting the panic button or making major changes next year, but some little twists to stir things up (perhaps from the Love Island playbook) might help this year a bit. They've not really had any drama in camp for the past 5 years (since the Lady C year) so stirring some up might be the thing to do. But really they're just going to have to ride this one out and push hard to get back to Australia next year.

I do think it's less the case that they're still at the castle and more the case that being back at the castle has highlighted how repetitive the shows production actually is - the trials so far have basically been variants of trials from last year, and utlimately there are only four or five versions of trials in different dressing they can do anyway.

No doubt when they return to Australia they'll push the animal element again, which for many is just as off putting anyway. I think they've long got away with more than they should in terms of animal welfare.

I wonder if that was because they didn't (have to) pay Holly as much as they pay Ant, so used those savings on the contestants, because there were some fairly big names in there (Noel Edmonds, John Barrowman, and Fleur East for example).

Catch 22 I guess in terms of relying on big names to bring in the ratings as the more they drop the less money you'd imagine they have available. They must be saving a fortune in airfares and 5 star hotel fees though.

Worth noting that year they only had one rather than two celebrities join the camp, reportedly due to the amount they paid Noel. I imagine the producers kicked themselves when he was voted off first. (I seem to recall the viewer's voting time was rather short, which probably didn't help.)
