Wouldn't be surprised and, in many ways, a smart move - the website is branded as BBC News, the twitter page is BBC News (World) and the two channels simulcast for so much now that it would make sense to unify them both under the same (stronger) BBC News brand.

Good. They should. It will strengthen the name BBC News and make simulcasts more seemless.
CNN doesn't have any problems in branding both CNN International and CNN US as just CNN.

While for those of us on this forum (not to mention those who actually work at the BBC!), the distinction between the two channels is important, it's not exactly something that the average viewer - whether in the UK or abroad - would be aware of. And with the degree of simulcasting now, the separate brands only risk confusion.
Alternatively, I suppose all the news bulletins on the two channels could run under the name "BBC News", while the channel name itself is... I don't know... "BBC World".

Which is what the intro used to be years back. This is BBC News from BBC World.
Just before the channel changed its name.
So, if World has a name change, so must I. Thereinafter, I’ll be known as JamesNetworkNewsPlus.

Actually that was a mistake when they rebranded Newsday. The overnight simulcast on air were always named "BBC News" since the News 24 days, so i don´t think that there will be a name change anytime soon.
It wouldn´t hurt the change (CNN and Al Jazeera have, for example, the same name for their international channel from a while ago) but i think that the BBC is not willing to do that since BBC World News operates as a commercial entity (vs BBC News channel).

So it's definitely not 'a mistake'.
It was a mistake on the sense that overnight simulcasts were always named "BBC News" before that. That intro of Newsday always sounded weird to UK audiences, so i think that they did a good choice to remove the "world" mention on the intro now (however, it is certainly a downgrade if we speak of the new graphics).

I hope they keep it bbc world news, everything’s made sense since they did this, I remember all to well the pickle they got themselves into 15 years ago, bbc world from bbc news lol.
I like the music on the new titles there’s a little extra going on when the letters get coloured in.
