I even saw the odd comment from someone saying they wished Right Said Fred would be removed from the repeats like Savile, thereby denying any royalties from them. As far as I'm concerned they've not contributed much of worth to anything, but even then to edit them out would be going a bit overboard...

Top of the Pops on BBC Four - James2001 - 04-09-2021

Yes, even despite the dangerous lies they've been pushing, that would still be a complete overreaction.

You can sort of understand why people would feel that way though if someone they know had been taken in by them, or at least someone else saying similar things, refused to get vaccinated and ended up seriously ill or worse though.

Catching covid, sending several days in hospital on oxygen and STILL pushing the anti-vax stuff does defy explanation though. Getting very OT for this thread now though...

As luck would have it, the same fate will befall the period when 'I Believe I Can Fly' was Number 1 in 1997; all three weeks of it topping the chart saw the credits run over the video.

It's a weird one with R. Kelly. Even allowing for more lax attitudes, it's perhaps surprising to an extent that TOTP even chose to play him by 2003, as his actions had been out in the public domain for a while and were the very reason why he couldn't perform - on at least one of the editions where he was number one, they briefly alluded to him not being allowed out of the US, and had him record an introduction.

IIRC the brief mention of 'Bump ā€˜N’ Grind's January 1995 exclusive performance by Bjork wasn't edited out during last years 25/12/1995 repeat, as well as a video clip of the number one he penned for Michael Jackson. Having said that, no guilty verdict's been given as of yet in his trial, and that probably counts for something in terms of the BBC's current stance on playing his output.

ISTR the Lostprophets were featured particularly frequently after the 2003 revamp had occurred, and did a couple of open-air exclusive performances outside of TVC. I suspect these were duly hyped up in other parts of the shows, so some of their appearances and mentions in trails + news features may well be too tricky to edit around.

Think there debut was just before the revamp, indeed when the crimes were revealed, I remember they used a clip of them performing on TOTP with the old square logo still in tact, which I'm guessing would have been one of the last shows before the revamp. After the revamp they had a few performances, including one up on the roof of TVC (although ironically, not their song Rooftops), which received a few flashbacks in the last few years, but they should be easy enough to cut out. They were part of the 40th anniversary celebration from Gateshead Quays as well. The TVC rooftop one was previewed for a few weeks before, but I would hope when they get to the 2003 rebrand they'll just skip that whole 24/7 feature entirely.

As long as they don't make the mistake some of the US media made and confuse him with H from Steps and end up banning their music instead Tongue

We'd probably lose half of the 1998-2001 shows if Steps were banned!

I've been waiting since the Radio 1 simulcast began in 1988 for the Reverend Mayo to do that line about your TV speakers being rubbish and to listen on Radio 1 instead, because I vividly remember it from the time. I wouldn't have guessed it was as late as this, though, and of course it was his last ever opportunity to do it because the simulcast ended at the end of the month when BBC1 went officially stereo (although it had been unofficially in stereo for ages).

Top of the Pops on BBC Four - mumu03 - 04-09-2021

Indeed, the earliest instance of TOTP itself being in stereo (the October 1986 edition hosted by Janice Long) would've been nearly five years ago by this point. Not that many people could've known that at the time, mind.

Top of the Pops on BBC Four - Colm - 04-09-2021

'Cancelling' Right Said Fred and Morrissey is, regardless of our own opinions, hardly justified if they're not breaking any actual law, nor under criminal investigation as a consequence.

Anyhow, two editions until the last cycle of Radio 1 hosts until February 1994, and we're now a quarter of the way through Bryan Adams' tenure at the top...

Only in London though, BBC NICAM tests didn't start outside London until 89/90 ish

Top of the Pops on BBC Four - James2001 - 04-09-2021

You have the fact that rather counter productively, ending the Radio 1 simulcasts would actually have taken stereo TOTP from most people, as not many people had NICAM equipment in 1991 (and many transmitters didn't broadcast it after the official launch even if they did). Radio 1 were probably happy to get the programme time back though.

Yes, as I said, not many people, and only those with NICAM sets around the Crystal Palace transmitter to begin with. There were a few other early stereo tests done by TOTP before the regular Radio 1 simulcasts began in September 1988; after the October 86 edition, I was interested to see if a decent amount of the 86-88 period was recorded and edited together that way, however it turned out to be only a handful more.

It's a bit surprising they're still promoting the simulcast given it's just about to finish, I can't remember if they actually mention that it's ended on air. I do remember the page of letters in Smash Hits about the revamp, with someone saying "Why is it not on Radio 1 anymore? Do they think the new show is crap?"

As you say, fewer people would have had stereo BBC1 compared to stereo Radio 1 at the time, but the Beeb didn't officially launch stereo until it was available in most of the UK and on most shows (hence why the first stereo show on the first day was The 8.15 From Manchester). That's in comparison with ITV where the various regions launched it as soon as they had it, and Channel Four who were promoting shows in stereo even when it was only via Crystal Palace and Emley Moor (I have the 1989 Christmas TV Times where various shows are billed as "Stereo (London/Yorkshire only)").

Yes, I remember seeing this billed and wondering who would be interested in what appeared to be an audio Top of the Pops, when they could be watching actual Top of the Pops at the same time. Hence why I never heard it, although despite knowing all the DJs from Pops and seeing the schedules in the Radio Times, I rarely listened to Radio 1 in those days.

I certainly used to listen to it, I remember listening to Mike Read and Mike Smith at breakfast and, alas, S*v*l* on Sundays, but by the end of the eighties it was ILR all the way, including the Network Chart on Sundays. And in the early nineties, everyone listened to Atlantic 252 (I remember a maths lesson about statistics where we did a survey of what people listened to, and Atlantic 252 came top by miles).

I did occasionally listen to Radio 1, I recall listening to Pick of the Pops and Pip Schofield in the car, and the roadshow sometimes, and I did the Pops simulcast once or twice as a novelty. But I didn't listen on a regular basis again until after Bannister, circa 1995 I was listening pretty much all day every day.

It wouldn't surprise me if one of the reasons why the simulcast was ditched was because Radio 1 were unhappy about the plans for their DJs to be sacked as presenters. After all, apparently TOTP would have been happy for Janice Long to continue presenting when Radio 1 sacked her for the crime of being pregnant, so they were clearly run under very separate entities at the time.

It was the IBA that took the initiative regarding ITV/4 NICAM. The Beeb had announced to the manufacturing industry that NICAM for them was coming 1987/8 ish. Then they had to cut costs and couldn't afford to convert the transmitters for it. The IBA stepped in, and rapidly converted the ITV and C4 distribution and contribution networks to dual audio Sound in Syncs. I think the entire ITV network was able to exchange material in stereo from the end of 1988, regardless whether or not their particular transmitters actually had NICAM. As you say, from that point onwards it was just a case of the IBA adapting each transmitter to NICAM. I think all ITV/4 transmitters were in NICAM by the end of 1992.

A brief snatch of Technotronic's music video for 'Work' in the 08/08/1991 edition's Breakers was all that was needed to make clear where the inspiration for TOTP's October 1991 opening titles likely came from...
