This is absolutely what needs to happen. Return it back to what Ted Turner originally envisioned, and cut out all the comment and opinion nonsense.
Trying to be the opposite of Fox News should be left to MSNBC as has traditionally been the way, CNN needs to urgently get back to its roots.

Unfortunately CNN did that for years, they stuck to straight laced journalism and FNC gained in popularity and CNN lost its way then they couldnt compete any more so they've had to get down and dirty with the rest of them. Unfortunately traditional news no longer makes money and its a commercial operation so they have to make a profit. Because FNC changed the game for everyone, opinion outrage talk tv masquerading as news is now the norm. Sad but true and because they let others now operate in their space by letting Headline News flounder and die on the vine they dont have a viable operation. CBS, NBC, NEWSY and a boatload of other headline channels have moved into that space so the pie is further divided, even if they relauched HLN has a proper 24 headline rolling service.
Sad but true.
Sad but true.

CNN was a mess before Zucker came in - bleeding viewers and constantly rejigging its programming. CNN's situation has stabilised under Zucker's tenure. The network has certainly seen better days, but it isn't stuck in intensive care anymore.
Sad but true.
It's all good and well for folks here to advocate for fewer gimmicks and less punditry, and more hard-hitting journalism. (And to be clear, on a personal level, I'd much rather watch straight news than talking heads.) I just don't know how people imagine that's going to be commercially viable if no one is watching.

Even during the early years when FNC was popular but then a major story would happen and people would turn to CNN and blow FNC out of the water. THats all changed. The ratings FNC is getting during this UKRAINE invasion is shocking. CNN is being decimated in the ratings by FNC and even MSNBC. They cant even compete now in the ratings area during war coverage. Even though they are by the biggest most experienced operation. I would never hold up Zucker as a saviour of CNN in any way. He totally destroyed the legacy of channel by allowing more personality driven tv. I dont think MSNBC would have gone as hard on talking head tv had CNN not done the same. But that ship has sailed. Even if they went back to hard news and pulll back all the anchor commentary I cant see anything changing. FNC would continue to demonize them as they have always done.

I disagree.
CNN's business model, even back to when it launched was always based around revenues generated from long-running breaking news coverage. This is typified in the channel's mini-boom in the late 80's with the Challenger shuttle disaster and the 87 stock market crash.
It's major boom came with the first Gulf War. The model was and as far as I'm aware still is, based on bidding for advertising. When there are major long-running breaking stories such as what we are witnessing now, advertisers scramble to get on CNN.
This is typified by seeing what brands are currently advertising on CNN (US), compared to Fox News' My Pillow and non-pharmaceutic joint-pain remedies.
That's how CNN has always, and still does make it's money. Once CNN gets into its stride "doing news", it is second-to-none as is being seen right now. The reason it is still struggling in the ratings is that a large section of the American people simply won't tune in to Don Lemon for breaking news for example because they expect it to be politically laden.
Wolf has seen an uptick in viewers because he is generally seen as a solid presenter, the others haven't for the reasons above.
CNN can, and I believe will recover once they have a wholesale clear-out of the talking heads, and as I've said numerous times before, return to news, and as they are right now, specialising breaking news.

Preaching to choir . As far as ratings are concerned, I hope you are right. But it doesnt look good for this major story that used to be their bread and butter. Because Thursdays numbers were awful. Especially when you consider a person that is not even a journalist is pulling 4.2 million viewers. Strange you laid their ratings woes at the feet of Don Lemon. :? Lets hope they can right the ship under their new leadership.

It's called "Trust".
Do you "Trust" what you are told by Fox or by CNN??"
Sounds daft, but it is really true.

No it's called being in a cult.
If only given the choice between those two, CNN is so far ahead of Fake News that honestly, they aren't even in the same timezone, never mind the same state or county. However, on this story, network news seems to be taking more of a lead here, and and such the audience just isn't going to cable news.
