A Portuguese investment firm has signed an agreement to buy the controlling stake in Lyon-based broadcaster Euronews from Egyptian telecoms magnate Naguib Sawiris.

Euronews said on Friday that Lisbon-based Alpac Capital had sealed a deal to acquire the 88 percent of shares in the multilingual TV channel held by Sawiris' Media Globe Networks (MGN). The deal is set to be finalized in early 2022.

“In the coming months, we will have to build a resolutely digital project so that, with this transformation, Euronews can take its rightful place in Europe,” said Pedro Vargas David, chief executive of Alpac Capital.

I never thought that Sawiris would ever sell Euronews!

What do they mean by digital project?

Last I heard it was close to going under so a surprise to see it has been sold.

Euronews launched a new on-air look on its Hungarian channel yesterday. It's very minimalistic, nearly all elements of the news ticker disappeared, and the logo is in the upper right corner now.

Some say that it's almost like if the captions are generated as DVB subtitles. But there's a little animation, so I think it still coming from the playout system.

Maybe they are testing the new design live, before rolling it out internationally.

Is the new look is going to be roll out internationally, starting from this Hungarian channel and then English one?

Excuse me, but... What is this? I am really sorry to see this. Really not liking it. It looks like the graphics of a local cable-access channel newscast. Really bad. Although the Lambie-Nairn graphics were inferior compared to 1998 and even 2008, it had a professional style and it looked OK for their operation. Even the in-house designs they introduced during the Euronews repositioning by NBC didn't look as bad as this.

Related to graphical changes, the other language channels have been tinkering with designs lately. For example, the David Lowe sound branding was retired from the Meteo segments, being replaced by an ambient composition from Sam Worskett:
