Not a good state of affairs.

I saw this online last night via my iPad, this doesn't really bode well for any international news broadcaster who has offices in China if you ask me. The fact the BBC journalists are having to escape to get away from the stalking nature, just for doing their job, suggests we'll be seeing more of this happening elsewhere. Still pretty upsetting John had to do that, just to continue to do his job.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s reporters also left China last year, after Chinese authorities detained a Australian-Chinese reporter who worked for the state run CGTN.

And unsurprisingly, Chinese “media” keep mocking John, saying he “hides” in Taiwan to avoid lawsuits by “Xinjiang residents”.

So who will take over those on-field stories on the Six and Ten? Perhaps Stephen McDonnell?

Very concerning. I suspect as well regardless of Covid and budgets the BBC will only send minimal numbers to China for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

I personally wouldn't be at all surprised if we ended up (within a couple of years) having no international broadcasters or reporters being located in China at all, given the growing threat to their privacy & safety.

Sudworth, who is in quarantine after moved to Taipei, delivered his first report tonight about the train crash on the Ten.

I think this isn't much to worry about, whether you are the BBC, ITN, CNN or anyone else - you will not be welcome on the mainland when you (basically) 'do your job' - China will be the only one who loses out here.

Props to our UK reporter who clearly does his job (too) well enough!

Chinese state propaganda machines (especially CGTN, which produces a weekly column to slam foreign media in prime time) and government officials keep inciting hatred against international news agencies, so to protect the safety of journalists in China is defiantly a main issue of global media.

I saw this news this morning! Absolutely outrageous. She's the consummate Correspondent and I can't even recall any reporting that might be deemed as a 'threat to Putin's rule book". A terrible loss for the BBC.

I don't think she's leaving the corporation (happy to be corrected!)
She did an interview on Today about it (which I've since heard twice again on the World Service) and I didn't hear any mention of her leaving the BBC.

Oh absolutely. I can’t fathom why she has been expelled other than Putin is a (insert explicative here). Here’s to either a reverse or a posting just as important where getting the real story out really matters.
