Just seen tommorw that there is now a BBC News Special with coverage about the Germany Election. Do we expect a result by then or a result on Monday?

Usually, when it comes to German Elections, the exit poll tends to be very accurate. So, it's expected that we will get the main result, pretty much straight after the polls close. The full results will take a bit longer.

They often end up with weeks or months of wrangling to form a coalition. Merkel may not be gone for some time yet, until a successor is found and the President can accept her replacement as Chancellor.

We may know the seat allocations tomorrow, but not who will be forming a government. Much beer will be quaffed before that happens.

The last term of Angela Merkel was the one that saw the most protracted negotiations, with about 6 months between the election and the formation of a cabinet. Even her first cabinet took only 2 months to form. None the less, the winner will be clear very quickly.

I'm glad that they are making the effort to cover it properly this year – I always think that the major European elections such as in France and Germany aren't given sufficient coverage compared to the US election, which dominates the agenda for weeks at a time. It's also going to be a rather unique election with Merkel stepping down and the great unknown of who the next Chancellor will be, and what coalition they will lead.

Oh that sounds like the last French presidential election they covered where everything was presented from Paris

Just to mention the times: 4:30pm to 8pm BST, hosted by Ros Atkins. German polls close at 5pm UK / 6pm local. (I notice FranceInfo also have a special beginning 4:30 UK / 17h30 France).

Bloomberg also have special coverage from 1700-1900.

DW also have special coverage from 1600 to 2200 tonight on their English language service, and prior to that, a documentary on Angela Merkel at 1530. That can be viewed via their website, and I understand the election coverage will also be livestreamed on YouTube.

DW's coverage is excellent (nice studio and videowall, clear/clean/colourful graphics as ever, and I've counted 7 OBs so far.)
