So I wondered, does anyone on this forum have any memories from the late night/early morning slot?

I think the majority of us will.
It was the last bastion of the 1997 branding scheme to survive (and used the original idents directed by Rob Kelly in July 97).
I used to watch a lot of videos recorded off it at school and when I was an insomniac as an adult I'd watch random programmes as background noise to try and help me sleep.
I think it was the longest ident ever used by the BBC, lasting in one form or another for the best part of 17/18 years. A handful of the BBC Four idents/package from 2005 are still around today but that's only 15/16 years, so best part of another 18 months or so, assuming Four doesn't get a new look in the meantime (assuming it sticks around at all of course).
