Remembering shows tv channels rebooted badly , can you remember many?
In our list we had Krypton factor they rebooted it when it was still on itv 7pm back in the 90s think it was rebooted again in the 00s but back to original format . The first reboot was so bad!

Telly addicts remember on bbc1 they scrapped the sofas had contestants standing on the studio floor like a board game.

Was ice warriors a bad reboot of gladiators?

What else has been rebooted badly??

Believe Krypton Factor 1995 was a condition of it being recommissioned. A lot of shows at that time had to change themselves if they wanted to continue (Bullseye was apparently the same but they refused, but its never been stated what changes ITV wanted).

Re: Telly addicts, you've mentioned evolution, rather than reboot. The show ran for three years straight.

Ice Warriors was just Gladiators on ice. The later Sky One Gladiators reboot didn't quite work either, which was mostly the same except played "over" water rather than "on" (frozen) water.

Not a reboot as such but the final series of Family Fortunes and Wheel of Fortunes were victims of budget cuts,

More like a spin-off. Gladiators was still running at the time Ice Warriors was made - and both shows came from LWT.

Making the 15 to 1 revival an hour long when one of the main things the original had going for it was the pace of having around 100 questions in half an hour never made sense for the show. Heck C4 could do a lot worse against Tipping Point than cutting both that and Countdown back to 30 minutes and putting them back in the 4pm hour.

Noels House Party of course had two or three reboots towards the end of it's run, though the one around series 4/5 which introduced the Trip Around the Great House and Number Cruncher, along with new titles, was an example of how you do it - build on what you've got rather than start from fresh.


That said my definition of a reboot, rather than a relaunch, would be a show coming back after having previously ended. One thing I never understand in the US in particular is how they'll revive drama franchises, but then make significant changes that it is almost a different show, when really they could surely have just launched "generic crime drama" as a new show.

I got a reply off Gordon Burns on Twitter a few years ago about the 1995 series of the Krypton Factor, when Challenge repeated it. He basically said it was a case of new heads of department (he didn’t suggest whether it was the Network or Granada) wanting to make change, and that they knew it was going to be rubbish despite warning them. But certainly that would tally up with Neil’s post about it being a condition of recommission. I guess it would also partly explain why there wasn’t a 1994 series either.

Did noel fall out with the BBC over the changes to house party?

Also remember changes to blind date that cilla didn't like , when you picked someone you could swap for a different person you liked look of more etc . Didn't that lead to partly why cilla black quit on the live blind date episode?

Edmonds had a major disagreement , the budget had been cut and one episode never happened.

Cilla Black saw format changes coming she didn't agree with, and so when the show went live dropped everybody in it by announcing she was buggering off, which had the effect of cancelling the show anyway after that series, though media relations tried to smooth things over later.

If we're talking relaunches, the final series of Live & Kicking really didn't work out did it? Was pretty unrecognisable once Katy Hill exited when it got shipped up to Glasgow for the last few months.

IIRC the head of entertainment at ITV had told Cilla's son who was also her agent that they were preparing to drop her so Blind Date would have been a goner even without the format changes.

The recent revival of Family Fortunes with Gino (nothing against him) is (as I've said previously on here) an exercise in torture. As was Bullseye in Epic Gameshow.

As I alluded to above, there was a major change of direction in 1995 where lots of programmes were asked to restyle themselves going forward (presumably because they were seen as stale and boring), and the two high profile causalities of this were Krypton Factor (with what it went out with in that new format) and Bullseye, which simply went out of production. The cynical could say it was new management wanting to stamp authority and get rid of programmes that had been on the air since 1977 and 1981 respectively, but they were both highly successful.

Of course it could be argued Krypton Factor went down that route to try and get rid of it and the changes (whatever they were) to Bullseye may have had the same effect, although it probably be argued shifting it out of its traditional Sunday night slot to Saturdays and later Fridays did more damage than anything else.

That must be due to return soon - they aired one or two newly recorded episodes early in the year then it disappeared again. To be fair as revivals go it's largely faithful to the original - just suffers as most of these revivals do from being too long, whilst Gino certainly wouldn't be my choice of host. Agree Bullseye just doesn't work in Epic Gameshow, though was better as a pro-celeb episode.

Surprised no one's mentioned the Mel and Sue attempted revival of The Generation Game a couple of years ago!
