Love, love, love that new music! Everything we've seen so far suggests (to me at least) that the new look will be a big improvement on the current one. It's just a shame they didn't opt to switch to a real studio - but you can't have everything...

It is rather a reorchestration of the MassiveMusic theme from 2009, but it sounds way better as you said. The reorchestration was also made by them. The new graphics, however, were made by BDA Creative in Munich. Additionally, the analog clock from old heute looks will be replaced by a digital one. We also have a first look at the new logo! graphics, which are still in the line of the former look, but more in line with the heute brand too.

Yes - it sounds like they have taken the current music and re-arranged/recorded it with a real orchestra (as opposed to the current synthesisers). I had read about the digital clock thing. It's all very promising, in any case.

Hmm. I'm not oversold on any of it.

Weaker musical composition which lacks the "oomph" of the current themes.

The studio looks like a smaller version of what they have now. Still a blue computerised dead space of nothingness but lacks the drama of the current set.

All in all it looks like they've had a cut to their budget and have reduced everything in size but with a similar look to it.

See, I disagree. I actually think the new music has more 'oomph', helped by the use of real instruments (at last!) rather than synthesisers. I never liked the current desk - always thought it was unnecessarily big. I'm not a fan of virtual studios full stop, and would prefer a real set (and indeed had read somewhere that that had been mooted by ZDF) - but the rest of it looks/sounds pretty solid to me.

I don't hate it. It's just after 12 years all they've done is made a smaller set and added an orchestra to the same theme. It's hardly a major change. Meh....

I think the smaller desk is a good decision because the old desk was way to big. It seemed like the zdf heute team didn't raelly know how to use it. In every show except heute journal, the presenter only used one position in the studio. This made the huge desk quite unnecessary.

I think the idea was that originally, different programmes would use different parts of the desk: for example, the Mittagsmagazin would use the far left end of the desk, whilst for a time, the late night news would be done in front of the desk from the right-hand side - but of course, programme formats change over time. I think the smaller desk is better - more intimate (and I think ZDF have said as much themselves).

Indeed, the smaller desk is more intimate and is suited to the conservative and straightforward approach of the main heute broadcast. Worth noting that, even if the bigger desk designed by Jürgen Bieling is staying on Studio 1 for the time being, it will be removed at a later date to place a desk similar to that in the new studio, and it will be used for virtual reality explainers and special coverage.
Seems weird that at a time everyone else is getting bigger desks they’ve chosen a smaller one!
Also if you haven't noticed, ZDF introduced a new corporate typeface called "ZDF Type".
It's currently used on their website and I'm expecting it's being used on screen and also for the new look Heute coming Monday.
It was designed by bBox Type.

Looks great. Big fan of modern German design and this is a great example of that.
It will be interesting how their new title sequences will look like. I hope it’s better than what they use for the 12 o'clock bulletin now.
What I like is that they kept a flat map for "heute" and a globe for "heute journal".

Also it looks like the logos are updated in the ZDF Type font, it does look similar to Helvetica but Helvetica's lower case "e" is wider compared to the new ZDF typeface.
