A frequent complaint from myself and other friends and family is how poor weather coverage is here in the UK, especially on an on demand basis.
Unless you wait around for the forecast after the news on the main terrestrial channels, or wait for the half hour on the news channel with no guarantee they’ll show it in place of news coverage - there’s no way to get a decent weather forecast that’s updated through the day when you want it.
Of course there’s the websites but they only give you a regional picture which can prove somewhat unreliable with a very clunky national picture, and the same can be said if you can still access the weather on Digital Text (BBCi). Met Office uploads video forecasts online, but they’re only updated twice a day and increasingly becoming just a voiceover over a map.
You can get News and Sport on TV on demand when you want it, why can’t you Weather given that’s a much bigger British obsession.

Yes, the Weather Channel was around from 1996-98. Had local forecasts on cable too.
How long did it broadcast for ? Cos that’s would probably be very empty ( I had Sky at the time but never watched these kinds of Chanel )
It lasted for about 18 months from September or October 1996 until the end of March 1998, it was broadcast between 6 and 11am on Astra Channel 60, which was on Astra 1D, which I believe wasn’t available to those users with older equipment. The Weather Channel timeshared with The Racing Channel, a simulcast of Sky Movies Gold for a while and Sky Box Office, before it became Sky Box Office 2.
The Weather Channel was also on cable and made use of having local forecasts, as they used to say ‘On the 8’s’ at every hour. However, the channel wasn’t available on all platforms. In our area we had NYNEX/Cable & Wireless and they didn’t add the channel until September 1997. At this point it used to timeshare with the Travel Channel, so like those viewers watching on satellite, we only ever saw the channel in the mornings. Which probably wasn’t enough to build an audience to pay the bills.
I’m surprised that they’ve never tried to bring back a non-stop weather service, even as a bonus service or on the red button.
Having a look now at the website which suggested it could have been "Sky News Weather HD" (although never confirmed, needing citation), that has now been removed and is now suggesting it could be the new frequency for the return of CGTN...

The BBC Weather site uploads videos of full national forecasts onto the homepage every few hours daily, with the regional equivalent available when you click through to a location too.
Of course up until the recent misguided cutbacks you could get your local weather via the connected red button on the BBC.

Apart from being part of linear TV bullies I can't see the point of a weather channel when we've BBC and Met Office apps freely available on our phones. If I'm out for a walk I check those not the TV.
Surely it must be more than that being tested?
