I'd say over paying for the Premier League rights. We had similar cuts a few years back in rights especially when the current deal was signed, and Sky would have been hoping to retain the rights at a lower value this time around - but the PL used the pandemic to avoid that risk, knowing the rights value was likely to drop, and instead offered the existing broadcasters the chance to extend their rights another three years on the same terms. It meant they didn't risk losing the rights, but further squeezed their overall budget.
RE: those cuts a few years back - Sky News let several presenters/reporters go back then, didn’t they? It was just before they moved to the glass cube. Wonder if that was related…?

The cuts a few years back - which accounted for long-serving reporters like Nick Collins, Phil Edwards and Tim Abraham - was linked to the over-paying for PL rights. This series of cuts is down to the current economic situation and like the previous round of serious pruning, it's those with longevity that are in the firing line.
