Interesting fact: Eamonn Holmes was a studio anchorman at the age of 21! Never realized he started in news so young. Clip:

A random question but does anyone know how the BBC cues it's countdowns at the TOTH, every hour? Like, is there an automated system which starts the countdown on the backend while commercials are playing on BBC News and BBC World News before it goes live on air at whichever point the commercials end?

Yes, though it’s a slightly different arrangement for BBC News Channel and BBC World News,

In BBC News Channel, the gallery goes straight to air, and at xx:58:30 or xx:59:00 the automation cues the countdown. The director will mix to it at the end of the weather and any trails that have been scheduled.

BBC World News goes to air via a presentation gallery and their automation runs the countdown with the various regional versions of the channel joining it following playout of commercial break, weathers, etc.

There’s also a numberless countdown loop which you’ll see the news channel use occasionally when it has to meet BBC One at a non-top-of-the-hour time for a national bulletin.

There’s that that scenic loop on the core feed leading up to the 59 sec countdown which we only recently discovered on bbc world news.
Always found this one quite interesting:

That would be telling!
If anybody has access to The Day Today DVD, it has a documentary labelled 'po-faced analysis' that includes a good bit of behind the scenes footage of BBC News from the mid-1990s (focussing on the BBC trainee programme) and some good shots of N2. Unfortunately, I have no ability to cap or rip it.
Old school regional ITV - back in the days when these were two separate regions!
