The soft set at the Millbank studio is getting its first outing

Based purely on that image, I'm not sure 'soft' is quite the word I'd use. Hard to imagine those backgrounds making any shot – wide or close up – look particularly inviting, so close to the presenter and guest and with such garish, stark colours on screen? I assume they are screens, right?

They look so bright, relative to the physical set, you have to wonder if they're going to wash out the people.

Soft is a generic tv term for “not at a desk”, in my experience.
Those screens do look hideously bright, though, so unless the lighting is bright to match it’s going to look odd.
With all the chat about GB News, I've often pondered whether a trick was missed not pushing LBC into TV. I presume doing so isn't a core part of Global's business, but to me the visual output almost feels like a "minimum viable product" to jump on the opinion-driven news bandwagon...

Sorry for not being clear - I was trying a play on ‘soft’ because it looked rather off-putting for a set intended to be more personal (interviews etc.).

Don’t screens often look more washed out in photos rather than overly bright? I don’t recall the last time I saw a photo of a set where the screens looked like that?

A lot of LBC’s output is people calling in by phone, so unless you change the format to make people appear via Zoom (which wouldn’t be loved by a lot of their callers - people at work or on the road, people who weren’t expecting to be on air 10 mins earlier etc.), it would be rather visually boring for a lot of its output.

Global closed down their TV channels a few years ago didn't they? I can't imagine they would go back to doing it on TV.

If they did do it then it would be as a feed on their website, though I imagine the presenters might not be so keen on having everything shown, the fad for studio webcams to watch presenters has long gone, presumably partly for that reason.

Reminds me of when a news programme I worked on got a new bit of studio ike that and I called it the 'soft set' The editor of the programme heard me and said 'now now we don't call it the soft set as the stories we use it for won't necessarily be soft'

That image looks partly virtual.

Incidently I think Iain Dale All Talk is a podcast rather tan primarily a radio programme

I think having the listeners appear via Zoom would be very off putting, more so for the person calling in than for the viewer.

Panasonic AW-150 cameras. 20x optical Zoom, and native UHD. Fine (in this day and age) for 'proper' telly
on the topic of visual output radio, it appears hear BBC are using consumer camcorders for their video output?

Global did have Heart and Capital music video stations in the 2010s, they were very well done with proper segues, audio processing, the playlists resembled the actual stations (unlike the Bauer ones) - but they were only ever on DSAT. They were shut down a few years back.

What a messy looking set up!

James Martin

Very messy. The BBC really hasn't caught up with its commercial cousins on visual. You'd never see Global or Bauer putting out video with that wonderful cable management.

Global are quite clever with this sort of thing - they've got spare studios for both Heart and Capital which can become any brand with a mouse click, which changes over the lights, the screens, the works. This means they can record star interviews and similar in there.
