Only a week to go until the French people go to the polls. Are we expecting any coverage/BBC special on the BBC News channel. 

It may only be the first round, but in France you'll have TF1, France 2, France 3 and M6 providing coverage along with the news channels. France 2 will provide the longest amount of coverage of the mainstream channels while the others end around 9.10pm local time to provide prime-time entertainment.

I expect the BBC will be doing something similar to the German election in September, with a few hours' coverage of the second round at least, probably presented from Paris with someone like Ross Atkins or Katya Adler.

What? Really? I think TF1 and France 3 (with its local/regional cut-ins) have always done through-the-night coverage as it has also been France 2, but really cutting away during the most important time for results to come to offer light entertainment? I would understand that for M6, but for these two channels, really? It has sense that TF1 cuts their election night programme to air a rebroadcast French film? It makes sense that France 3 drops a lot of time allocated to regional updates on the election to air the premiere of the new series of a Kiwi polar (no offence intended)? Maybe TF1 and France 3 want viewers to redirect them to LCI and France 2, seeing the mutualisation of their newsrooms and resources, but this measure is really too extreme and not good publicity for both channels.

Speaking of another tradition, the mid-election debate, Macron's and Le Pen's are asking TF1 and France 2 not to put Anne-Sophie Lapix as co-moderator, due to Le Pen having a heated interview with her last month on France 2's 20 Heures news, as told by Le Parisien. Most times, the main presenters of their 20h newscasts or their respective chief political editors are moderators of the debate, and it was expected TF1's Gilles Bouleau and her would moderate this year's debate.

Le Parisien is reporting also that TF1 wants Bouleau as their co-moderator, which would lead France Télévisions to find another female co-moderator from its own group of news presenters (so to respect gender equality in moderation), including C dans l'air weekday moderator Caroline Roux and Elysée 2022 presenter Léa Salamé.

Just to reiterate the times of the mainstream TNT channel election coverage in France. (All times in CET)

TF1: 18h30-21h10
France 2: 19h30-23h45
France 3: 19h30-20h50
M6: 19h45-21h10.

In this last phase of the election, TV and radio channels are held to strict airtime equality. For this reason, BFMTV opted not to cover politics at all this weekend (but election rallies were aired on their app and website) while LCI quickly put together a special weekend in which they managed to give all candidates equal airtime (and thus air incumbent Emmanuel Macron's only rally of the campaign).

France Télévisions is going big for its election night coverage. Sunday's France 2 coverage will come simultaneously from France Télévisions' headquarters atrium and France 2's main news studio (Studio C Pierre-Desgraupes), and will be presented by Laurent Delahousse and Anne-Sophie Lapix, alongside political editor Nathalie Saint-Cricq, grand reporter Jean-Baptiste Marteau and Télématin newsreader Johanna Ghiglia, who will provide news updates. Coverage will be delivered in partnership with France Inter, France Médias Monde, the parliamentary channels and LVMH's newspaper Le Parisien; Ipsos Sopra/Steria will renew its partnership with France TV to provide the exit poll.

The style and scope of the coverage will allow for a massive array of AR/VR elements, in a style heavily inspired by BBC's Scottish referendum and Sky News' general election coverage, thanks to the installation of a cable cam in the glass roof of the building; additionally, Delahousse will be able to talk to Lapix directly from the hall by using XR technology similar to that of the Eurosport Cube and Disguise's virtual set extensions for ITV Sport and Disney+, among others. The coverage will be directed by longtime producer Jérôme Revon, which has produced France 2's election coverages since 1995.

All visual elements, which will be simultaneously used by all of France TV's channels in every single territory and region, were created fully in-house by La Fabrique France Télévisions, under the direction of Arnaud Vincenti and Nicolas Usdin. The set design was created by Franck Felleman and built by his Set-Up atelier; additionally, La Fabrique made virtual set extensions for Studio C, which will be used for debates. The music from Jérôme Coullet is the same used for their regional and municipal election coverage in 2020, which replaced a long-used theme since the 2012 presidential election and remixed over the years.

Shortly before 19:00, coverage will be passed to the regional centres before switching back to the national centre. Franceinfo, on its own way, will feature continuous coverage from 06:30 and extended election night coverage from 18:00, with Louis Laforge, Lucie Chaumette and Adrien Rohard, from their Atrium Gilles-Jacquier studio. They will also employed live, smaller-scale AR/VR elements and use of their Surface Hub for real-time analysis. Shortly before 11pm, they will switch to a live TV/radio simulcast, a special edition of Jean-François Achilli's Les Informés.

More names of presenters for election night coverage:

• TF1's coverage will be led by Gilles Bouleau and Anne-Claude Coudray, with Adrien Gindre (political editor) and Frédéric Dabi (exit poll director, in name of TF1's agency IFOP).

• M6's short special is being announced as a special 19h45. Nathalie Renoux will present (as every weekend), but its effort will be a bit boosted by sharing resources with RTL, including an intervention by Olivier Bost (RTL's political editor). Their exit poll is being provided by the French branch of Harris Interactive.

• BFM TV will offer the longest of the night's coverages. Beginning from 6h with regular programming, from 18h, Maxime Switek and Apolline de Malherbe will offer continuous coverage for four straight hours; coverage will be simulcast with RMC between 19:00 and 21:00. From 22h, Jean-Baptiste Boursier will take over, and that day the channel will broadcast live overnight with Fanny Wegsheider and Benjamin Dubois. The early edition of Première édition will begin exceptionally at 3h, with Pauline Pioche and Julien Migaud-Muller, in their final appearance before the obliged Easter break.

• LCI will be on air from 19h, with Ruth Elkrief and Julien Arnaud, Darius Rochebin will take over at 23h.

• The parliamentary channels will have a common night, with Brigitte Boucher (LCP) and Thomas Hughes (Public Sénat) presenting.

BBC now has French Elections 2022 special listed for BBC News and BBC World News from 18:30 to 20:00 on Sunday. Presented by Tim Willcox.

Just to add that Franceinfo will stay on-air for an extra hour on Sunday continuing until 0100 CET before handing over to France 24.

BFMTV seem to have quite a nifty set-up. It's the big studio at Altice Campus that they've used before for special programs and election coverage but with some changes since last time.

TF1's set-up is once again in their HQ atrium. Their shortened election specials are using a similar set-up to that of five years ago, but with many changes and tech updates, including an enlarged curved video wall and a screen floor. The set was designed by Olivier Illouz and his Studios 40 consultancy, and graphics will come from TF1's in-house news graphics group, led by Yoann Saillon. We'll see if TF1 uses production music for its election coverage once again (since privatization, TF1 has largely used production music or cues from LCI's music packages for their election nights and surrounding shows).

BFM Paris Île-de-France are doing their own election show tonight from 17h30-20h presented by Marguerite Dumont.
